Akron head football coach Joe Moorhead is a Central Catholic graduate and last night, the Vikings had a huge presence at his game.
A large contingent of current Central Catholic football players made the short drive to Akron for a GameDay visit as the Zips hosted Kent State. It was an exciting game as Akron scored a late TD to win 31-27 and it was also a memorable day for a number of Viking players.
While on the visit, Moorhead and his staff extended offers to a number of Central Catholic players, including freshman Roman Thompson, which became his first D-1 offer. Thompson’s teammate and fellow freshman Sa’Nir Brooks, also received an offer from the Zips, his first D-1 offer also.
Pittsburgh Sports Now was able to catch up briefly this morning with Thompson, who recapped his day and talked about that first offer.
“Leading up to getting the offer, the other recruits and I were in the locker room after Akron defeated one of their rivals Kent State in an exciting game,” said Thompson. “The atmosphere in the locker room was unmatched. I met coach Bill Fessler (Akron’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach) in there and he pulled me aside and said keep grinding and working and you’re only a Class of 2027 player, but you have the offer to Akron. Receiving this offer just takes a huge weight off my shoulders but it makes me hungrier and makes me want to work harder in everything I do.”
“Yes, I had some idea could be coming at the game. I want to give thanks to Dee Brown at 210ths for that, he’s an amazing guy and is always putting in a good word for the kids around the Pittsburgh area to college coaches.”
Aside from receiving that offer, Thompson and the other local recruits were able to watch an exciting game and a big win for Akron. PSN asked Thompson about the Gameday experience and the interaction he was able to have with the Akron coaching staff.
“It was a really good visit, especially watching them beat their rivals in a thriller,” said Thompson. “I think Akron is a really good offer, especially it being my first one. All the conversations I had with coaches meant a lot for me beacuse they all knew who I was and complimented me, which boosted my confidence and lets me know if I keep grinding and striving to be the best, I can accomplish my goals.”
Other local players that received offers last night from Akron were: Central Catholic 2027 athlete Sa’Nir Brooks, Central Catholic 2027 cornerback Larry Moon III, Central Valley 2027 running back Jance Henry, McKeesport 2027 athlete Kemon Jones and University Prep 2025 defensive back Xair Stevenson.
