A former Pitt linebacker has found his new home.

Aydin Henningham — a 6-foot-2, 225-pound fifth-year senior from Delray Beach, Fla. — announced Thursday night that he has committed to and signed with Albany State.

Henningham was originally a member of Pitt’s class of 2020 and was viewed nationally as a major recruiting win for Pitt — selecting the Panthers over Auburn, Florida, Kentucky, Louisville, Minnesota, Mississippi State, Nebraska, North Carolina State, Ohio State, South Carolina, Tennessee and UCF.

He just wasn’t able to find consistent playing time at Pitt over the years, suffering a season-ending injury in 2022 and switching between positions during his first couple of seasons in Pittsburgh.

Henningham will have two seasons of eligibility remaining at Albany State, after playing four years in Pittsburgh and entering the transfer portal in November.

“I am writing to express my deepest gratitude for the invaluable experiences and support I have received during my time at the University of Pittsburgh,” Henningham wrote on Twitter. “As I enter the transfer portal, I wanted to take a moment to say thank you to all the coaches, training staff and strength coaches for believing in me.

Your support contributed to my growth both on and off the field. As I embark on this new chapter, I remain appreciative and look forward to the next steps in my journey. I have decided to enter the transfer portal as a grad transfer. With 2 years left of eligibility, I will pursue my graduate degree and play my last 2 seasons.”

Despite the lofty expectations, it never worked out for Henningham at Pitt as he bounced around different positions. He arrived as an athlete, playing wide receiver before making the switch to linebacker.

As a true freshman in 2020, Henningham played in six games, all on special teams, and he redshirted in 2021 and missed all of 2022 with an injury. This past season, Henningham did not see the field on the defensive side of the ball.

Henningham is the fifth Pitt transfer to find a new home this offseason, joining Deandre Jules (South Carolina), Byron Floyd (Buffalo), Trey Anderson (Utah State) and Samuel Okunlola (Colorado).

What a bust

Only a bust because of someone else’s opinion of his ability. Sounds like a player that really didn’t have a position and was rated on potential.

Thinks he’s better than what he is which is why he will be a better fit to the program he is transferring to.
