Update (9:47 PM)-
In its first game in eight days, the Pitt Women’s Basketball Team concluded non-conference play as 56-39 victors over Le Moyne Thursday night at the Petersen Events Center.
Pitt (6-7) was paced by Aaryn Battle’s career high 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting and six rebounds, which she accomplished while playing the full 40 minutes. Both Liatu King and Aislin Malcolm each netted 12 points, while Marley Washenitz matched a personal best with her 10 rebounds, while also contributing seven assists. Washenitz also recorded five blocks, the most by a Pitt guard since Shayla Scott in 2010.
Le Moyne (2-10) saw Lytoya Baker achieve a double-double with her 13 points and 11 rebounds.
It was a slow start for Pitt as it went without a basket for 3:27 in the early stages of the opening quarter, going 2-for-11 and trailing by three points at frame’s end.
Jala Jordan’s insertion in the quarter did provide an offensive boost as Pitt did record a couple of and-one opportunities.
In the second quarter, Washenitz recorded three assists on Pitt’s first four makes as the Panthers took the lead and held onto a 30-27 edge at halftime as Le Moyne’s bench was held scoreless.
Despite Pitt not converting from the field for another 4:23 it held onto a lead in the third, but Battle’s 10 points in the period held Pitt extend the lead to 41-33 with 10 minutes to play.
Despite the victory, the locker room was quiet, a clear sign of disappointment after, a sentiment which extended to the post-game press conference where coach Tory Verdi challenged his team and Battle agreed that with ACC play opening Sunday at #14 Virginia Tech that things have to change.
Update (4:08 PM)-
ACC will finish with 10 teams posting a winning record. That’s the second time in the playoff era that’s happened (11 in 2016).
SEC has done it 3 times (2014, 2015, 2018). No other conference has in last 10 years.
