Hopewell 6th Grade Travel Basketball Team Opens Season with Big Win

Published

on

The future is bright for girls’ basketball in Hopewell is something that I’ve written and said many, many times over the last year.

Between the young roster of the Hopewell High School team and the tremendous talent on both the 7th and 8th grade junior high teams, a lot of winning will take place in the future.

There’s another group of girls that we need to start talking about and getting familiar with.

In the elementary ranks, Hopewell has some really good players in the 6th grade.

Tonight, the Hopewell 6th grade travel team opened their season in the Beaver County Travel League. This group of girls will be playing in plenty of games over the next couple of months.

Not only will they compete in this travel league against other 6th graders, but they also plan on challenging themselves by taking part in a 7/8 grader winter league at Hopewell.

After a championship season a year ago, this group of girls want to accomplish the same results before they take their talents to the junior high ranks next season.

Tonight, this Hopewell Navy team took on Rochester and came away with a 20-7 win!

The theme of the night for the Lady Vikings was defense as they were able to keep Rochester scoreless for the first half, taking a 12-0 lead into halftime.

In terms of scoring, the Lady Vikings were led by Rilyn Davis with 12 points, Nevaeh Pope with 4 and Lydia Jacquay with 4.

Nice job ladies!!

This Hopewell 6th grade travel team’s roster consists of:

Callie Sadler
Cora Quinn
Isla Rock
Leah Peterman
Lydia Jacquay
Nevaeh Pope
Vanessa Kurta
Talia Santia
Rilynn Davis
Gia Yurcina

Coaches: Jamie Yurcina, Brandon Davis and Mike Kurta.

This season, some of the teams that Hopewell will compete against are South Side, Beaver, Western Beaver, McGuffey, Aliquippa, Beaver Falls, Ambridge, Blackhawk, Central Valley and New Brighton.
