Slow Starts Dooms Hopewell 8th Grade Basketball in Loss to Quaker Valley

Hopewell Township- If these two teams played 10 times, Hopewell would likely win 8 or 9 of those games. However, today wasn’t one of those 8 or 9 times for the Vikings.

Hopewell got off to an awful start offensively in the first half which put them in a hole that they couldn’t recover from. Too many forced 3-point shots and not enough ball movement on offense was the issue.

Near the end of the 1st half, Hopewell’s defense gave them a spark and then shots started to fall in the second half which got them back in the game, but the Vikings couldn’t complete the comeback as they lost, 33-27.

1st Quarter Recap:
*The only field goal of the first quarter came on a corner 3-point shot from Josh Gill off an inbounds play, Hopewell 3-2.

*That was it offensively though Andrew Arzberger played well as he was very aggressive both defensively and on the boards.

End of 1st Quarter: Quaker Valley 5 Hopewell 3

2nd Quarter Recap:
*After trailing by double-digits, Hopewell started to make a comeback. Reed Budavich pulled down an offensive rebound and put it back in for 2 points, Quaker Valley 17-7.

*As QV tried to inbound the ball, Zack Sampson came up with a steal and layup, Quaker Valley 17-9.

Halftime: Quaker Valley 19 Hopewell 9

3rd Quarter Recap:
*Despite being undersized, Hopewell did a nice job on the boards this quarter. On this possession, Sampson pulled down an offensive rebound and put it back for a layup, Quaker Valley 26-12.

*Later in quarter, Jaxsen Covalt gets a steal at midcourt and takes it in for a layup, Quaker Valley 26-14.

*After a defensive stop, Sampson hits a nice shot from the baseline, Quaker Valley 26-16.

End of 3rd Quarter: Quaker Valley 26 Hopewell 16

4th Quarter Recap:
*Off an out of bounds play, Gill hits a shot from the wing to get the deficit under 10, Quaker Valley 26-18.
