Former Pitt QB Target Expected to Walk On at Florida State

former Pitt quarterback target Trever Jackson

Trever Jackson didn’t sign with a program on National Signing Day in December, but he’s expected to commit to a school soon.

247Sports has placed a crystal ball for Jackson — a 6-foot-3, 185-pound four-star quarterback from Orlando, Fla. — to stay in Florida and sign with Florida State, but according to Noles247’s Zach Blostein, Jackson is expected to join the Seminoles as a preferred walk-on.

Jackson was previously committed to Ole Miss, spending a few months as a future Rebel, but he decommitted on Oct. 30 and picked up offers from Tulsa, Michigan State and Syracuse. But it appears he’s going to begin his collegiate career as a walk-on.

It’s been a wild ride since Jackson appeared to be a pretty solid lock to end up a Pitt Panther following an official visit in the first week of June.

Jackson took an official visit to Pittsburgh, spending time with former offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti Jr. and wideout Zion Fowler-El, and it appeared that it was only a matter of time before he committed to Pitt — one of the schools in his then-top five, along with Appalachian State, FAU, Indiana and Tulane.

“They did a great job,” Jackson told Pittsburgh Sports Now following the visit. “Just some stuff I was questioning about, they answered all the questions and filled all the gaps in the hole that I was worried about, which is good.

“Pitt was always at the top, even before the visit, but now they’re even more at the top — even higher. I’m gonna need somebody to up the game or something.”

Jackson was a major target for Cignetti and the Pitt coaching staff, but as he picked up more national interest throughout the summer, he shifted further and further away from Pitt and eventually committed to Ole Miss.

247Sports rates Jackson as the 348th-ranked recruit in the class (22nd-ranked quarterback and the 48th-ranked recruit from Florida) while Rivals rates him as the 23rd-ranked quarterback and 70th-ranked recruit from Florida — holding a 5.8 Rivals Rating.

Pitt ended up landing Julian Dugger as its quarterback in the class of 2024, a three-star out of Penn Hills in Pittsburgh, and Alabama transfer quarterback Eli Holstein was added via the transfer portal.

Sounds like there’s more to the story if he’s walking on

From him bouncing around and if he can’t make it at Ole Miss kid definitely has grade issues. That’s what it sounds like to me, but I shouldn’t judge. walking on is kind of strange.

What about the passage above insinuates he has grade issues? Furthermore Ole Miss is a fine institution of higher learning that has put out numerous world changing alum. Only thing strange is your negative assumptions of this young man whose done nothing but stay positive and put himself in the position to have us comment about his future.

Ole Miss? World changing alum? They should have changed Mississippi first. I could never blame someone for exploring their options…outside of Mississippi. I say he’s a talented walk on with a pocketful of NIL cash. Good for him if that’s the case.

Who cares? Pitt is pretty well set at QB. They need a punter!

Hopefully – hopefully – Holstein works out. Otherwise, they have nothing at QB.
We should be all over this kid.

Steve, they need more than a punter. They can’t even hire Coaches. Look at the Programs that can replace a entire staff in a week and start recruiting. Shows you what kind of program we have. Plus not hiring other powerhouse assistants from Division 1 programs. What a mess. See who Syracuse brought in. Brought in some young coaches that are good recruiters.

I disagree. It’s never been narduzzi’s style to make fast moves as far as coaching hires. I think he takes is time and is methodical. They hired 3 assistants in the last couple days. All of those guys were hired for specific reasons. Pitt has consistently been one of the better programs in the acc. I trust narduzzi to make decent decisions, at least for now.

The young man seems confused and without competent guidance. I am good with Dugger. I believe Dugger is a better recruit with a higher ceiling.
