Jeff Capel Talks Last Play Against Miami: ‘I Thought There Was a Lot of Contact’

Over the weekend, Pitt basketball fans all over felt that the team should have been given a chance to tie the ball game at the free-throw line in the final seconds of its game against Miami.

The Panthers’ head coach did, too.

With ten seconds remaining, freshman guard Jaland Lowe made a move on Miami big man Norchad Omier, due to the mismatch. Lowe has had success breaking down bigs in mismatch situations throughout the year, and once again, had his chance. However, when he rose up for a shot, he, and Capel, felt he was fouled by Omier. No whistle was blown.

Miami gathered the ball and clinched the victory.

“We wanted to put the ball in his [Lowe’s] hands,” Capel said. “There were several options on the play. Miami switched, which we anticipated them possibly doing, so we had him on a big guy, and we like that. Jaland has shown in the past few games his ability to make shots, to get fouled, obviously to make free throws, but to make plays. Looking back at it, I thought there was a lot of contact on the play, so we did a pretty good job of that, drawing the contact.”

Lowe finished as the team’s second-leading scorer in the game, finishing with 17 points on 6-for-13 shooting. The rookie has now played at least 25 minutes in his last seven games, starting each of the last six contests. He has scored at least nine points in all seven games, and has surpassed the 15-point mark three times (17, 17, and 20 points). The Panthers fell to 12-8 (3-6 ACC) on the season with the loss to the Hurricanes.

“But I also thought we had an opportunity to drive. We’ll discuss it with him today. Obviously, he was heartbroken after the game, as were we. But we have to do a better job of not getting down 19 points and then having to come back. We made a heck of a comeback and put ourselves in a position where we had an opportunity to tie the game and send it into overtime and perhaps win it. But we can’t dig holes like that. He was a big reason why we were able to get back into the game, but we were a big reason, collectively, as a group, myself included, why we didn’t win the game.”

Pitt will now take on Wake Forest (13-6, 5-3 ACC) at home at the Petersen Events Center on Wednesday, Jan. 31 at 7 p.m. The Demon Deacons recently lost to North Carolina by a score of 85-64 on Monday, Jan. 22, and have been away from game action since then leading up to the Pitt game.

Triggered – says the guy who belittles people to make themselves feel superior. Who brings up topics that aren’t even relevant to the discussion so you can feel like you’ve one up’ed then. Spelling, degrees, grammatical bs, you bring it all. The truth is, Jeff Capel is pitts coach. You dislike that. You whine about it when they lose, you’re a mute when they win, which, truth is, pretty cowardly. Next you’ll bring up someone’s wife or some other bullshit. Look, we get it, you want Capel to be pitts coach as much as I want to see you next… Read more »

LOL you told me, fanboy. And by the way, it’s “Pitt’s coach” . Another clown that can’t handle simple, objective facts. And also, it’s make “himself feel superior” if you’re going to talk shit, try not to sound like a cretin doing it……

I’m a fan boy. Capel lover. Cretin. Dumb. Can’t punctuate. We get it, youre still a bitchboy

You’d think you’d be smart enough to realize you’re being baited into correcting grammar like the stooge you are.

Not nearly as bright as you think you are. Maybe a 3rd degree would have done the trick.

Hey look, perfect grammar and spelling.

Oooh. I actually have 3 degrees for the record. Two from the University of Pittsburgh and one from Duquesne. And fwiw, I also passed the CPAat the first sitting and have held FINRA Series 7 (95.6) Series 66 (91) and 24 (94). So actually I most likely am as bright as I think I am.

So, actually, I am most….help you out you unmitigated genius. And yes, if you have to spout your credentials, you are projecting your insecurity and inferiority complex. Maybe the 4th degree would have taught yoi that.

Guess you’re triggered telling me how “smart” you are. I’m not impressed

I don’t mind you stirring everyone up. It’s expected on these kinds of sites. I’m honestly surprised how many people engage. But, in my humble opinion and experience in engaging with folks on this site and others I’ve always found it a bit low-, class to correct people’s grammar… unless it’s completely ridiculous, then of course it is fair game. I don’t comment often, but when I do it is usually on my phone, on the toilet in my office. For whatever reason the interface on my phone to make comments isn’t great… it’s actually bad. I have a later… Read more »

Your points are well taken. I will say that if you do follow my activity I never fire the first scud. I’ll generally make an observation or express an opinion regarding MBB. Usually following that the name calling begins. I have no qualms about responding in kind. And yes I can be unsparing

Well skippy if the person had an issue they can respond- not you. Not triggered at all- you made the remark about my academic credentials. And I could care less if you are “impressed” the truth is just that.

I’m not going to pretend a hypocrite like you will learn anything here. You will berate the next person’s grammar, Jeff Capel, etc because you’re a small man. Nothing will change. I know this. Always have to belittle people, it’s just who you are. Like I said from the beginning, last man I’d want next to me in a fox hole is you.

The coach says, “…we have to do a better job of not getting down 19 points…”. Nothing more needed to be said.

It is a waste of time for the team (including the coaching staff) to spend any time/energy on a blown call.
