Saturday’s Best ESPN BET Bets: Virginia Tech-Pitt, Maple Leafs-Avalanche, Villanova-UConn

After going 3-0 Thursday night, we suffered a setback Friday night going 0-3. Nothing could get home last night, starting with the Duquesne/Fordham under that was doomed by the Dukes making double digits free throws in the first half and a strong Ram run in the second. Despite a strong third period, low scoring early periods caused the over not to hit. The Timberwolves could not overcome the Bucks and failed to cover as favorites in the loss. We moved to 167-124-3 on the year.

Today is the first official day of Pirates Spring Training games, as they travel to Fort Myers to take on the Minnesota Twins. I was just in Fort Myers on my vacation, a lovely place. If you’re thinking about betting these Pirates today, just remember to always check out the lineups before you do. Truthfully, the only full time starter in the lineup today is Henry Davis, who will bat third and catch. The Pirates need him to catch as much as possible in the spring.

The Twins have guys like Kyle Farmer, former Pirate Carlos Santana, Royce Lewis, Max Kepler and South Park native Alex Kiflloff in the lineup. These are going to be normal starters for Minnesota this year. The line in this game is Twins -150 while the Pirates are +120. The over/under is 9.5, which is sort of intriguing to me but I like to wait a few games to see if a trend emerges before betting Spring Training totals.

This game starts at 1:00 PM today. If you feel like betting this game, start small. Remember, it’s only Spring Training.

Virginia Tech Hokies at Pittsburgh Panthers (-2.5) O/U 142.5 5:30 PM on the CW/22 the Point

Pitt suffered a major setback in their tournament hopes Tuesday when they were throttled by Wake Forest on the road. One of the major reasons why the Panthers struggled was the Demon Deacons shutting down Blake Hinson, who managed only 10 points on 3-10 shooting. As Hinson goes, so do the Panthers go.

Virginia Tech is coming off their biggest win of the year after they blew out rival Virginia at home. But the road this year has been rough waters for the Hokies, going 1-8 after from Blacksburg. Look for Pitt to rebound today and get a big win to keep them on the bubble for the tournament.

Toronto Maple Leafs at Colorado Avalanche (-120) O/U 6.5 7:00 PM on ESPN+

I know this will be the Hockey Night in Canada game tonight but in America, you will have to be subscripted to ESPN+ to see a matchup of top of the best teams in the NHL as the Maple Leafs visit the Avalanche. Auston Matthews has been on a tear since the All Star break, scoring 2 Hat Tricks in the past week and leading the NHL in goals with 52.

The Avalanche will look to contain Matthews but I don’t think even on the top teams in the West can stop him. Toronto already beat Vegas on this road trip and I believe they make it 2/2 tonight against the Western Conference’s best.

Villanova Wildcats at UConn Huskies (-11.5) O/U 133.5 8:00 PM on Fox

The Huskies lost for only the third this year Tuesday when they lost by double digits to Creighton. Now they will have to refocus for a Saturday night showdown with a team barely hanging on the bubble in the Villanova Wildcats.

The Wildcats gave the Huskies a scare last month when UConn only escaped with a 1 point victory at the Wells Fargo Center. This game will be at the loud XL Center in Hartford, which was rocking in the Huskies blowout victory against Marquette last Saturday. I believe the crowd will power UConn to victory again and they will get the cover versus Villanova.
