Tim Salem didn’t escape the mass layoffs made to the offensive staff earlier this offseason, but he’s landed on his feet in the ACC.
Salem, who spent the last nine seasons as the tight ends coach at Pitt, has taken a new job at ACC foe Georgia Tech, where he will serve as a special advisor for special teams. Rivals’ Kelly Quinlan first reported the news last month.
Salem has previously served as a special teams coordinator at Colorado State (1989-90), UCF (2009-11) and Illinois (2012-14). And he’s the second former Pitt coach to accept a special teams job this offseason, joining Andre Powell (East Carolina).
Salem, 62, was one of Narduzzi’s original hires in 2015, and he spent the last nine seasons as the tight ends coach and a key recruiter in the Northeast region for the Panthers.
Salem was a key recruiter when it came to landing Kenny Pickett, Izzy Abanikanda, Jason Pinnock, SirVocea Dennis, Solomon DeShields, Carter Warren, Samuel Okunlola, Maurice Ffrench and Matt Goncalves.
But there was a disconnect for some reason when it came to recruiting tight ends and tight end production over the last two seasons. So, it led to his dismissal, along with offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti Jr., offensive line coach Dave Borbely and Powell — and wide receivers coach Tiquan Underwood accepted a job in the NFL.
Salem has spent decades as a college coach, originally arriving at Pitt from Illinois (serving as the special teams coordinator and running backs coach), and he’s had stops at UCF, Ohio State, Purdue, Colorado State and Arizona State along the way.
Pitt and Georgia Tech are not scheduled to play in 2024, with the next scheduled meeting coming in the 2025 season at Boddy Dodd Stadium in Atlanta, Ga.
