National CFB Personality Uses Pitt as Argument Against CFP Auto Bids

Published

Pitt football.

There isn’t a College Football Playoff format that will please everybody. It’s impossible. The new format certainly isn’t an exception.

The 2024-25 college football season will introduce a 12-team CFP format, expanding upon the four-team format that had been in place since the conception of the CFP in 2014. And with the introduction of the new 12-team format, Power conference champions (ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, SEC) will receive first round byes.

Josh Pate, a national college football personality with CBS Sports, isn’t a fan of auto bids in the new CFP format for many reasons, he said on a recent edition of his Late Kick show. His biggest gripe, however, was how “inferior teams” would hypothetically receive first round byes.

Pate brought up the 2021 season in which Pitt knocked off Wake Forest to clinch the ACC championship. Pitt finished the regular season 12th in the CFP Poll, and under the new format, the Panthers would’ve earned the four seed and a first round bye.

Pate felt like Pitt didn’t deserve a first round bye.

“Auto bids are going to lead to inferior teams getting first round byes,” Pate said on his Late Kick show earlier last week. “I don’t need to take you back any further than 2021. I got nothing against Pitt, I got nothing against Pat Narduzzi, but the fact that the 2021 Pitt Panthers would’ve had a first round bye despite being ranked 12th in the country at the end of the year is a joke. It’s ridiculous. And it’s not deserved.

“It’s only deserved because they happened to be plopped down in an inferior conference and conversely, I take that same team and put them in the Big Ten or the SEC, they’re not sniffing the conference title.”

Pitt went 11-2 in the regular season in 2021. The Panthers clinched the ACC Coastal and then knocked off Wake Forest for the outright title. A top-12 finish would’ve earned a spot in the CFP regardless.

Kenny Pickett was a Heisman finalist quarterback, Jordan Addison won the Biletnikoff Award and the defense was one of the very best in the country at getting after opposing quarterbacks. The Panthers would have been a CFP team. It wasn’t a perfect team, not with the losses suffered throughout the season, but it did its job.

There isn’t a rational Pitt fan who would say that the Panthers would’ve won the SEC or Big Ten then. But, regardless, the Panthers won the ACC. They did their job. They won their conference. You can argue otherwise, but Pitt earned its place.

Josh who??? Fans of most sports are used to grading teams based on their history, not of a particular season. Which is why lifetime records agains any team are worthless mentioning. You have to grade in the moment. Rankings are worthless because most writers do not see more than a few games a weekend. Any playoff system selected will be subject to how many of the athletes decide to skip the playoffs in favor of their lifetime pursuit to the NFL. Either way the networks and conferences make more money. And writers have a few more weeks not to worry… Read more »

that shows how flawed College polls are pitt was higher than 12th, but they put all the SEC and Big Ten teams way up in the standings before they play a damn game

What guys like him want is a cartel where only a decent few teams from a select conference or two even get a seat at the table. Nobody cared with it was teams like Southern… Read more »

Pitt was only ranked 12th due to the loss in the Peach Bowl. If Pickett plays in that game, Pitt blows out Michigan State and ends up in the top 5. The idiot who wrote that summary conveniently left that critical part of the narrative out. Pitt loss the bowl game because the 2nd string (Patti) got knocked out of the game, Pickett sat out the game, and a very inexperienced 4th string kid (Davis Beville) who barely if ever got off the bench played the vast majority of the game. Pitt played it’s schedule and won it’s right to… Read more »

MSU’s Kenneth Walker III sat out as well if you are talking talent skipping the game (who has been a much better pro) hurts teams.

D-Coord. had us in man press quarters on a third and long that did not help. Ended up in pass interference. Did not run the ball all that well after Izzy got dinged up. Tried a toss sweep on 3rd short. Folly of events including hurt QB.

Funny thing is the ACC disrespect in rankings and tournament seeding in basketball this year but ACC performed well. ACC just needs to hype itself better. The league is not inferior in reality

This is the same guy who probably didn’t think Florida St deserved to be in the last four. While I felt an 8 team playoff was all that was needed. This works too and I hope it eliminates this conference changing BS. As for Pitt in 2021, the best team at that point in the season will win the title. Players in the CFP will not skip out with the chance to win a national championship. It will make all the other bowl games stupid though. That’s already been occurring with players backing out

Correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t Pitt BEAT UT in Neyland Stadium that year? UT is a SEC team right?
