Pitt Sports Comm Staff Earns Consecutive FWAA Super 11 Awards

Pitt SID EJ Borghetti.

The Pitt college sports communication department has earned its second consecutive, and sixth overall, Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) Super 11 Award.

Pitt was honored by the FWAA for its outstanding departmental staff, along with those of BYU, Cal, Clemson, Illinois, Kansas State, Kentucky, LSU, Navy, Nebraska and Oklahoma — and Florida State head coach Mike Norvell, who received Super 11 Coach of the Year.

“We once again honor some programs who have provided great assistance to writers for many years and have demonstrated a culture of excellence in what they do in their pressbox and in terms of accessibility to players and coaches,” said FWAA Executive Director Steve Richardson in the release. “We applaud those programs as well as the two newcomer programs.”

It’s the sixth time that executive associate athletic director E.J. Borghetti and the Pitt staff have earned the honor, which is tied for fourth-most among the 2023 honorees.

The 2023 winners were deemed by the FWAA to have provided excellent accessibility during the week of their respective games, along with post-game availability to players, assistant coaches and head coaches. Other criteria for the award included beat reporter access, interview requests, etc.

Borghetti, who has spent over 25 years with the Pitt athletic department, is the face of Pitt athletics. All six Super 11 honors have come under his direction, and he’s regarded as one of the top sports information directors in college football, but he leads a talented staff.

R.J. Sepich has served as the director of football communications and digital strategy since 2022, working closely with Borghetti during that time, and Dominic Pasquale was named the assistant director of strategic communications last summer.

Celeste Welsh, another long-tenured member of the Pitt athletic department, has worked in media relations since 2004. She was promoted to director of media operations and community engagement in 2021.
