Over the past few seasons, Robert Morris has shifted its recruiting focus towards the transfer portal and has added just a handful of prospects out of high school.

On Thursday, Andy Toole and the Colonials returned to their high school roots and landed their first high school talent in the class of 2024 with Maurio Hanson announcing his commitment via X.

Hanson hails from Charlotte, N.C. and is a product of Julius L. Chambers High School.

Checking in at 6-foot-7, 200-pound power forward, Hanson put up a strong senior season with the Cougars, scoring 15.5 points, securing 8.5 rebounds and adding 3.7 per game. He recorded 16 double-doubles and two triple-doubles on the way to a second-team all-district nod.

Hanson played a big part in the Cougars playoff run this season as they advanced to Round Four of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association tournament. The 4A Elight 8 bid was secured after the Cougars defeated Weddington, which was aided by Hanson’s 17 points and 16 rebounds.

According to Prep Hoops North Carolina, Hanson in the 20th-ranked prospect in the state.

The addition of Hanson is the fifth in the class of 2024 for Robert Morris with the other four coming as transfers. 6-7 Amarion Dickerson (Mineral Area College), wing Ryan Prater Jr. (Akron), forward Ismael Plet (Arkansas-Pine Bluff) and guard Josh Omojafo (Gannon) joined the Colonials through the transfer portal in the past two months.

Hanson is a solid young addition to the frontcourt for RMU as he picked the Colonials over other interests that included, Texas A&M, Appalachian State, Charlotte, East Carolina, Murray State, USF and more.
