Pitt Lands Commitment from Top 4-Star CB Target Elijah Dotson

What did Archie Collins need to do after losing all of his starting cornerbacks to the NFL? Bring in some more. What has he done? Brought in some more.

Collins helped land Kentucky transfer cornerback Jaremiah Anglin Jr. last month, and he’s once again helped to land a four-star recruit — a high school recruit this time.

Elijah Dotson — a 6-foot-2, 175-pound four-star defensive back from Belleville High in Detroit, Mich. — announced his commitment to Pitt Saturday afternoon at a special ceremony outside Detroit, choosing the Panthers over a list of finalists that included Michigan, Michigan State and Penn State.

He held Power Four offers from Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kansas State, Louisville, Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, Purdue, Tennessee and Wisconsin. But the Panthers stood out largely because of the coaching staff.

“They’ve been showing a lot of love,” Dotson told Pittsburgh Sports Now in March. “They were my first offer, so that will always be a special one. They’ve been consistent since day one. They’re the first school for me to get my journey rolling.”

Pitt initially offered Dotson on Jan. 17, 2023. Archie Collins extended the offer way back when and the Pitt staff did everything they could to roll out the red carpet after the fact; Dotson definitely felt the love.

“I got a great relationship with Pitt, probably the best relationship with any coach right now. Everything’s been good for the most part. They’ve been recruiting me pretty hard,” Dotson said.

Collins, in particular, was been the driving force in Dotson’s commitment.

“He’s a great coach,” Dotson said. “He teaches me a lot. He wants what’s best for me. He’s there to answer questions. I watch film with him. We talk a lot.”

Collins and Cory Sanders recruited Dotson as a defensive, a cornerback, in particular. Dotson, who is an All-American and Junior Olympian on the track, is an athlete who was recruited offensively and defensively, but Pitt sees him as a lockdown corner. A corner that could slide inside if needed.

Dotson did a lot of everything during his junior season at the University of Detroit Jesuit High, racking up 43 receptions, 1,653 all-purpose yards and 18 total touchdowns — adding 66 tackles, three interceptions and 11 pass breakups. And he feels like Collins will be able to help elevate his game.

“My goal is to go to the league,” Dotson said. “Coach Collins produces guys like that and obviously that would be a great fit and if he can get me to the league, then that’s my best option. It’s exciting to be able to work with somebody like him.”

247Sports rates Dotson as the 24th-ranked safety and third-ranked recruit from Michigan in the class while On3 rates him as the 18th-ranked athlete and eighth-ranked recruit from Mchigan.

Rivals rates him as the 98th-ranked wide receiver and 10th-ranked recruit from Michigan.

Pitt now holds six commitments in the class of 2025:

Dotson, offensive lineman Shep Turk (Jefferson Hills, Pa.), three-star wide receiver Tony Kinsler (Port Orange, Fla.), three-star wide receiver Bryce Yates (Chesterfield, Va.), three-star defensive lineman Trevor Sommers (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and three-star quarterback Mason Heintschel (Oregon, Ohio).

Awesome recruit. Great job to win a highly competitive battle, coaches. The kid seems both visionary (i.e. path to the NFL) and loyal. DBU!
