Former Pitt basketball player Steve Maslek has died at the age of 58.

Maslek, a Freedom, PA native, died unexpectedly in his home in Freedom on Monday. A member of the Pitt basketball program from 1986-89, Maslek shared the court with Panther legends Charles Smith, Jerome Lane, Curtis Aiken, and others.

He was a part of the 1986 Big East Regular Season Championship team while at Pitt. The team won another Big East Championship in the following season, when it added young Sean Miller to the roster.

Arkansas head coach and former Pitt assistant (1986-88) John Calipari shared his thoughts on the tragedy on Twitter.

“One of our teammates from Pitt, Steve Maslek, passed away suddenly,” Calipari said. “A shock to us all. Steve was a good teammate and a good friend to all. This is so sad! Rip our friend!”

As reported by the Beaver County Times, Maslek gave back to the community in one way by resurrecting the Croatian Fraternal Union’s annual national basketball tournament. Read more about Maslek’s impact on the tournament here.
