Pitt’s ‘Zoo Crew’ TBT Team Adds Important Player

Zoo Crew has added another weapon to its roster for this summer’s The Basketball Tournament.

Former Pitt guard Nelly Cummings will be competing for the team full of former Panthers for the second-straight summer.

Cummings played one season for Pitt after starting his career with stints at Bowling Green State and Colgate. In 36 games this past year, he played over scored 11.1 points, dished out 4.8 assists, and grabbed 2.6 rebounds per game. Cummings shot 36% from three-point range as well. He stepped up big in Pitt’s biggest games of the year, scoring 15 points in Pitt’s First Four NCAA Tournament game against Mississippi State and 13 against Iowa State in Pitt’s Round of 64 win. He worked out for the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets prior to this year’s NBA Draft, but went un-drafted.

Cummings played his first professional basketball for AEL Limassol BC, before changing teams. He now plays for Academic Plovdiv in the NBL in Bulgaria.

Zoo Crew will host a TBT regional from July 20-24 at the Petersen Events Center. This year’s team, so far, includes Jamel Artis, Nike Sibande, Cummings, and Lamar Patterson. Jamarius Burton previously committed to play for the team, but then received shoulder surgery earlier this offseason.

Last year in Zoo Crew’s first game against Herd That, former Panther Jamel Artis finished with a team-best 21 points, while Sam Young hit five of his 12 field-goal attempts in the loss, scoring 20 points. Cummings, Greg Elliott, and Josh Newkirk combined for 13 points in the back court for the Panthers.
