A short walk down Fifth Avenue in Pittsburgh’s Oakland neighborhood connects the city’s two most prominent football schools.

The pipeline between the University of Pittsburgh and the powerhouse high school football program in Pittsburgh Central Catholic has transcended generations as Vikings turn into Panthers with many then going beyond to the next level.

Pitt is once again pushing its hardest for a Central Catholic athlete in the Class of 2025.

Bradley Gompers is one of the last top targets available in the WPIAL in the recruiting cycle and on Thursday he included Pitt in his top seven schools.

The valuable three-star athlete is being recruited as a linebacker by Pitt and has built an unwavering connection with the staff and linebacker coach Ryan Manalac, who has made it  known that the Panthers want Gompers badly.

“He’s made it very clear to me that I am the priority for them,” Gompers told Pittsburgh Sports Now.

Pitt sees a lot of value in the 6-foot-5, 215-pound prospect as they feel he would fit perfectly into their defense.

“With my skill set, he thinks that I would be a very good fit in their defense, and I agree with him. Their defense is very similar to schemes that I’ve run in the past and I think that’s big in fitting in,” Gompers said.

With a short distance to the South Side facility, Gompers has become such a frequent visitor that his relationship with head coach Pat Narduzzi and the rest of the staff has gone beyond a typical high school recruit.

“I’ve gotten to know him the past couple of years,” Gompers said about Narduzzi. “I’ve been to Pitt – I can’t even count how many times. Every time I’ve sat down and had a long conversation with coach Narduzzi, at this point, it’s just catching up nowadays. If I were to go down to campus to see coach Narduzzi, we just catch up and talk about what’s going on. He’s already talked to me so much about schemes and how I fit in the defense as coach Manalac has and why they want me. He’s made it comfortable for me during my visits.”

Gompers was invited by the Panthers’ staff on Thursday to come out and watch their next door neighbors in the Pittsburgh Steelers take part in their Organized Team Activities.

“I watched the Steelers practice for about an hour and a half. Got to see all the coaches and staff again. Not a huge visit but got to catch up with all of them and watch practice, so it was cool,” he said.

Like any other recruit, Pitt has capitalized on their connection with the Steelers as Gompers got to see it firsthand on his visit.

“The connections that they have with the Steelers are really big. They send a lot of guys from Pitt that go to the Steelers because coach Tomlin is right around the corner watching practice. He sees what he likes in Pitt players,” Gompers said.

As Pitt tries to land Gompers, he has been in communication with some of his past teammates that now call Pitt home, including 2024 defensive lineman Ty Yuhas.

“I talk to Ty all the time,” Gompers said. “We’re good friends. He tells me about what it’s like up there and why I should come. He tries to convince me all the time. I’m definitely in touch with all those guys.”

Like many Vikings that have made the jump to Pitt, Gompers has felt the hometown push by the program.

“It’s around the corner and being the hometown hero, the fans get into it, so it’s pretty cool,” he said.

Along with Pitt, Gompers is considering West Virginia, Duke, Michigan State, Maryland, Northwestern and Rutgers.

He tells PSN that he plans on making a decision by the end of June or early July and is looking to lock in an official visit with the Panthers towards the end of June.

WPIAL kids are overrated. The proof is in the results. A small percentage have actually made a significant contribution to their team. For every JPJ, there is a Jeter, Wade, Jurkovec, Davis, Banks, Raines, Beatty, Rawlings, etc…

BTW: As soon as he gets an offer from PSU, Pitt/WVU will be eliminated. Not a smart move in the day of NIL money. For example, Tiqwai Hayes. PSU has already recruited Alvin Henderson, another 4-star player in the same class along with high 3-star player in Kiandrea Barker. They also have true freshmen 4 star running backs Quinton Martin and Cory Smith. No worries though… Someone is gonna be sitting and not making NIL money.

Yes, we all know how great psu is at luring in young athletes on the verge of becoming men. Rhythmic towel snapping is also a popular past time in happy valley. Who can compete with that?
