Pitt Extends First Power Four Offer to Big IOL Target, Sets Up OV

Pitt offensive line target Torian Chester.

Pitt offensive line coach Jeremy Darveau told Torian Chester to give the phone to his mother. Darveau wanted to speak to her.

So, Chester got up, told his mother that Darveau wanted to talk and passed the phone off. It started as some small talk, trading pleasantries and such, but Darveau didn’t beat around the bush.

“I just want to let you know that Torian has a full scholarship offer to the University of Pittsburgh,” Darveau told Chester’s mom.

Chester — a 6-foot-5, 315-pound interior offensive lineman from Westover in Albany, Ga. — didn’t catch the rest of the conversation. He was too busy running around the house, screaming his head off. You don’t receive your first Power Four offer every day, after all.

Chester also holds offers from Buffalo, Colorado State, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Liberty, Tulane and Wofford, but the offer from Darveau and the Panthers was special. It’s been in the works for a few months now.

The Pitt coaching staff first reached out after his spring game in the spring, with Darveau serving as the main point of contact. The relationship has really developed over the last few months.

“Coach Darveau kept a buck with me,” Chester told Pittsburgh Sports Now. “He was like, ‘Hey, we like your family and me and the offensive coordinator want to offer you, we’re just waiting on the head coach.’ And one thing I can say about that is I like how after being recruited so many times, I like how the offensive line coach kept it a buck with me and made sure he communicated with me on where things sit with me and the head coach.”

Chester has done some research since he first started hearing from Pitt. He knows that the Steelers share a practice facility with the Panthers, Pittsburgh is a city environment and the Panthers play in the ACC.

“It seems very welcoming,” Chester said. “They were very welcoming. The head coach, he texts me, he’s nice. Coach Darveau,  he communicated, he was nice and he kept it respectful the whole time. Good energy, you could tell he was a good person just from talking to him.”

Pitt views Chester as an interior offensive lineman. He’s played both guard spots and center at Westover and possesses the size, speed and strength blend that makes him an asset in the run game.

“That’s the best thing that you’re gonna see on my film,” Chester said. “Yeah, I’m good at pass protection, but when it comes to my running game, I don’t play, I get off the ball, I don’t hitch, I go meet ’em.”

Chester isn’t ranked by the major recruiting services (247Sports, Rivals or On3), but as he’s picked up his first Power Four offer — and receives increased interest from Power Four programs — that’s going to change. He’s hearing from Georgia Tech, South Carolina and Vanderbilt.

He told PSN that he plans to take his official visit to Pittsburgh over the weekend of June 20. And that he’s currently looking at a late July commitment date.

Chester is looking to eventually commit to the program that most makes him feel at home.

“Does it remind me of home? I mean, really, that’s it,” Chester said. “Does it remind me of home and with my family? And once I get up there with my family, will we still be treated with the same respect once I’m there?”

Pitt holds six commitments in the class of 2025, four-star cornerback Elijah Dotson (Detroit, Mich.), offensive lineman Shep Turk (Jefferson Hills, Pa.), three-star wide receiver Tony Kinsler (Port Orange, Fla.), three-star wide receiver Bryce Yates (Chesterfield, Va.), three-star defensive lineman Trevor Sommers (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and three-star quarterback Mason Heintschel (Oregon, Ohio).
