Pitt Wrestling Adds Commitment from State Champion

Pitt wrestling has picked up a commitment from a two-time state champion in the class of 2025. Tristan Steldt — a 157-pound wrestler from Fennimore High in Wisconsin — committed to Pitt Tuesday night, giving the Panthers another top-ranked recruit in the class. He won back-to-back Wisconsin state title over the last two seasons.

Steldt made it out to Pittsburgh for an official visit in April, spending the weekend with head coach Keith Gavin and the coaching staff. He also took an official visit to Bucknell.

Steldt put in an uber-impressive senior season at Fennimore, going 41-4, and he clinched a 16-4 decision over Coleman wrestler Micah Kuchta to clinch the title at 157 pounds.

He won the 160-pound title as a junior, which featured a 58-second pin in the quarterfinals and an impressive decision against dominant rival Tyler Sunday last year. He accomplished just about everything possible over the last two seasons at Fennimore.

“Tristan wrestled loose and smart,” Fennimore coach Chad Steldt told SWNews4U. “Win or lose he has learned that it is all a process of improving himself individually. Even after the state title he made a comment that he needed to fix the last minute of that match so he can technically fall next time. I mean you just won the title and his mind is already thinking steps ahead.

“I would have to say he has navigated the waters of being the coach’s son quite well. It is extremely stressful on him to have his dad at the forefront of the program and the external chaos that he has to deal with. I think for Tristan it is like a weight off his own back when he wins that title because it helps silence the critics.”

Steldt is an excellent pickup for Gavin and the Pitt Panthers, adding a high-upside commitment who should be able to help the Panthers back toward national title success.

Pitt went 10-8 (2-3 ACC) last season, finishing fourth in the ACC championships and 26th in the NCAA championships.
