Pitt All 105: K Sam Carpenter Waiting His Turn Behind Ben Sauls

Pitt kicker Sam Carpenter

All 105 is a Pittsburgh Sports Now series profiling each of the 105 members of the Pitt 2024 training camp roster.

Sam Carpenter, a redshirt freshman kicker from Foxborough in Foxborough, Mass.

2023 season: Carpenter played in one game as a true freshman last season

Stats: Carpenter converted his lone point-after attempt (PAT) last season against Wofford in the season opener

Camp outlook: Carpenter will work behind Ben Sauls with the second special teams unit and continue to hone his game at the college level

Projected role: Carpenter may very well be the kicker of the future, but he will not see the field this season unless Sauls is out of action or the coaching staff feels like the situation calls for a “free” kick

Sam Carpenter (5-foot-11, 190 pounds) committed to Pitt in the class of 2023 as a preferred walk-on, choosing the Panthers over Boston College, Indiana, Rutgers, West Virginia and others. He was initially committed to the Hoosiers.

Kohl’s Professional Camps, a national kicking recruiting website, rated Carpenter as the 46th-ranked kicker in the class of 2023.

“Carpenter had a strong showing at the 2022 Underclassman Challenge,” Kohl’s wrote. “He has powerful hips and crushes his kickoffs. He charted 12 points in the field goal session and was impressive with his command and “pop” throughout the camp. His big ball on kickoffs was competitive with the top players in the country. He has the leg speed and technical refinement to become one of the best kickers in the 2023 class.”

Carpenter handled placekicking and kickoff duty for Foxborough, hitting on field goals of 24, 29, 38, 39 and 44 yards this season, and he’s showcased a level of leg strength that fits the ability to fill both placekicking and kickoff specialist duties — as Sauls has done this season.

Sauls is the lone scholarship kicker on the roster, and while he would be able to return for a sixth season in 2025, he could potentially exit following a successful season in 2024.

Carpenter appears to be the heir apparent behind Sauls at this point.
