Pitt All 105: RB Daniel Carter is Another Coach in the Room

Pitt running back Daniel Carter

All 105 is a Pittsburgh Sports Now series profiling each of the 105 members of the Pitt 2024 training camp roster.

Daniel Carter, a sixth-year senior running back from St. Thomas Aquinas in Margate, Fla.

2023 season: Carter played in all 12 games last season, racking up a career-high 28 carries for 134 yards (4.8 yards per carry) and two touchdowns

Stats: Carter has recorded 66 carries for 271 yards (4.1 yards per attempt) and six touchdowns in his five seasons in Pittsburgh

Camp outlook: Carter is one of the longest-tenured players on the roster, entering his sixth season with the Panthers, and he’ll be one of the offensive leaders during camp this summer

Projected role: Carter is coming off his most-used season as a Panther, and he will be in the mix for that No. 2 spot but more so situationally

Daniel Carter (5-foot-10, 230 pounds) initially committed to Pitt over offers from Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Michigan, Ohio State, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and West Virginia. His final decision eventually came down to Pitt and Kansas State.

Carter is a very, very smart football player. He’s relied upon as a veteran presence in the running backs room, and while he won’t ever be a “star,” he’s a valuable member of the room.

“Daniel is like an adjustable wrench,” former running backs coach Andre Powell said in March. “He can do anything in the backfield and some things on the line that the tight ends do. He’s the smartest guy in the room … Daniel may be one of the smartest guys I’ve been around. He can do a lot of things, special teams, offense.”

Rodney Hammond Jr. is entering the season as the starter, and Carter, Desmond Reid and Derrick Davis are right there competing for additional snaps in the offense.

It’s the final collegiate season for Carter, and he’s like another coach in the room. But he has some tread left on the tires.

There are no mulligans in football like in Trump’s golf game (or NCAA EA video-consoles). Or run that back they do in practice. Daniel Carter has made some great plays and then came up short in a few situations, that’s football. Glad he is in PITT uniform again this Fall.
