Top Pitt DB Target Announces Commitment Date

Pitt defensive back target Joshua Guerrier

While Pitt hasn’t landed every recruit that has spent time in Pittsburgh this summer, it doesn’t mean the chase is over.

Pitt has landed seven recruits who have made official visits this month, and there are very likely recruits who will commit late this month or next, those who wanted to make absolutely sure that Pitt was it before locked in a decision.

Joshua Guerrier — a 5-foot-9, 160-pound three-star athlete from Ocoee in Ocoee, Fla. — is one of those recruits who took an official visit to Pittsburgh and didn’t commit. But the Panthers are still firmly in his recruiting chase

Guerrier will be announcing his commitment on July 1.

Guerrier holds offers from Boston College, Cincinnati, FAU, Illinois, Iowa, Iowa State, Kentucky, Liberty, Louisville, Marshall, Pitt, Temple, Tennessee, USF, Wake Forest, Western Kentucky and Wisconsin.

He’s already visited Pitt, along with Iowa State and USF, and he’s scheduled to visit Iowa this weekend. It appears that his decision will come from his official visits.

Pitt was one of the more recent offers for Guerrier, with Lindsey Lamar extending an offer on Jan. 30, and he had a visit to Pittsburgh during the spring to check out the program. And his official visit last weekend went very well.

He’s a versatile recruit out of Florida, exactly the kind of defensive back the Pitt coaching staff likes to recruit. It makes sense why the Panthers have prioritized him so highly.

He did a little bit of everything for Ocoee last season, completing 8-of-13 pass attempts for 53 yards, racking up 30 carries for 218 yards (7.3 yards per carry) and two touchdowns and six receptions for 79 yards (13.2 yards per reception) and a touchdown.

But his future lies on the defensive side of the ball, and he recorded 38 tackles (29 solo), two tackles for loss and one interception last season.

247Sports rates Guerrier as the 52nd-ranked athlete and 77th-ranked recruit from Florida while Rivals rates him as the 23rd-ranked athlete and 71st-ranked recruit from Florida — holding a 5.7 Rivals Rating.

Pitt holds commitments from two defensive backs in the class, and it’s perhaps the best unit so far. Elijah Dotson and Shawn Lee provide a strong base for unit, and Guerrier would only further cement the strength of the position.

Pitt holds 13 commitments in the class of 2025:

Three-star Akram Elmagni (England), three-star wide receiver DaMarion Fowlkes (Olney, Md.), three-star tight end Max Hunt (Tampa, Fla.), offensive lineman Shep Turk (Jefferson Hills, Pa.), three-star wide receiver Tony Kinsler (Port Orange, Fla.), three-star wide receiver Bryce Yates (Chesterfield, Va.), three-star running back Ja’Kyrian Turner (Bushnell, Fla.) and three-star quarterback Mason Heintschel (Oregon, Ohio) offensively.

Three-star Shawn Lee (Harrisburg, Pa.), three-star linebacker Justin Thompson (Olney, Md.), three-star defensive end Julian Anderson (Orlando, Fla.), four-star cornerback Elijah Dotson (Detroit, Mich.) and three-star defensive lineman Trevor Sommers (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) defensively.

Understand this comment comes from the business side of recruiting, but a 5’ 9” DB? I get it’s not the size of the dog and all but geez that seems a bit undersized to be going against Power 4 WR’s.
