Pitt’s basketball roster currently has 12 scholarship players, with the option of adding one more. In addition, the team roster shows four walk-ons for this year’s team. Let’s learn a bit more about those four.

VASON STEVENSON – JUNIOR – 6’3 Forward

Stevenson is a local product, coming from Montour High School via McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania. He wears number 21 for the Panthers. Stevenson played in two games for a total of three minutes as a rookie. He grabbed one rebound in his limited action on the floor.

Stevenson finished in 2nd place in the WPIAL finals just a few years back, losing to Adou Thiero, Markus Frank, and Quaker Valley in the Petersen Events Center. Stevenson exploded for 23 points and eight rebounds in the loss.

BENJAMIN MAYHEW – SOPHOMORE – 6’4 FORWARD

Mayhew is another local product. The Wilkinsburg, PA native played his high-school ball for Propel Braddock HIlls.  Mayhew rocks number 13 for the Panthers.

In his senior season, Mayhew averaged 25 points and six rebounds per contest. According to Pitt’s roster notes, Mayhew became the first player in his school’s history to surpass 1,000 career points in high school.

JAJUAN NELSON – SOPHOMORE – 6’7 FORWARD

Nelson is the lone Philadelphia native on this year’s team. The 6-foot-7 forward wears number 44.

As a senior at String Theory Charter School, Nelson averaged more than 15 points and eight rebounds per game.

LIAM MIGNOGNA – FRESHMAN – 6’9 CENTER

Mignogna played his high-school ball for Hampton, another local school in the WPIAL. He surpassed the 1,000-point total in his high-school career back in March of this past spring during his senior year. Mignogna and his Hampton teammates earned 2nd place in WPIAL 4a action this year, falling to Brandin Cummings’ Lincoln Park Leopards in the championship game at the Petersen Events Center.

In that game, Mignogna finished with 20 points as his team’s leading scorer. Mignogna is listed at 6’9, 220 pounds and will wear number 24 for Pitt.

Am I the only one who thinks Minogna might eventually be a contributor?
