Former 5-Star Pitt Target No Longer With Previous ACC Team

According to a report from James Henderson of InsidePackSports, former five-star prospect MJ Rice is no longer with the NC State basketball program.

Pitt head coach Jeff Capel hosted Rice on his official visit to Pitt in August 2021, prior to his senior year at Prolific Prep in California. The five star then went on to play his freshman season for Kansas, appearing in 23 games but playing less than ten minutes per game. He then transferred to NC State to play for Kevin Keatts last season, but only appeared in nine games. Rice averaged 4.1 points per game in just 8.8 minutes of action per contest. Rice then chose to sit out the remainder of the season and did not play during the Wolfpack’s run to the Final Four. NC State applied for a redshirt for Rice when he missed the rest of the season for the Wolfpack.

Pitt basketball recruited Rice in high school and once again last year when he went into the portal before choosing NC State. The Panthers do have one more scholarship available if they want to use it, but the wing position is a bit crowded with Zack Austin, Amsal Delalic, and Marlon Barnes Jr.

NC State won last year’s ACC Tournament, stealing an NCAA Tournament bid and running far with it. The Wolfpack made it all the way to the Final Four, knocking out Texas Tech, Marquette, Duke, and Oakland behind DJ Burns and company.
