Former Panthers Bub Carrington, Blake Hinson Share Optimism for 2024-25 Pitt Hoops

Last season ended in disappointment for the Pitt basketball program when it was left out of the NCAA Tournament.

While the team, and the staff, was proud of what it had accomplished throughout the season, the end result did not match the expectations set at Pitt. Despite losing stars Blake Hinson and Bub Carrington from that team, the Panthers’ staff has gone out and brought in elite replacements in the form of two guards, a wing, and two forwards inside.

While interviewing the former Panther stars this week, I asked Hinson and Carrington the same question. I said, “I’ll give you 30 seconds, and you have to convince me why Pitt’s basketball roster is going to make the NCAA Tournament this year.”

Carrington was ecstatic to answer the question, and immediately asked when the timer was going to start. As soon as I gave him the green light, he rattled off some thoughts on almost every player on the roster.

“First of all, you have, I think one of the best point guards in the ACC next year in Jaland Lowe. Absolute floor general, absolute scorer as well. You have two other older guards, strong older guards that know what they’re doing, been in college for a very long time, and they’ve been good in college for a very long time. You’ve got three athletic wings, two 7-foot foreign shooters, a 6’7 foreign that can do everything, and you have two strong bigs that you need in college basketball. You literally have everything, everywhere. They don’t lack at any position. They’re going to the Sweet 16, at least, and you heard it here first.”

Hinson was short and to the point,

“That roster, and I don’t need 30 seconds, is going to make the NCAA Tournament this year because it was assembled by Jeff Capel. That’s it. Final statement.”

Pitt brought in guard Damian Dunn through the transfer portal via the University of Houston. The Panthers also added Cam Corhen, an intra-conference transfer, from Florida State. Amsal Delalic joins the team after playing pro ball for several years in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and joins other freshmen additions Brandin Cummings and Amdy Ndiaye as newcomers on the roster.

Carrington continued to talk about the team, this time answering my question about Delalic.

“Coach calls him a Bosnian Bub, so apparently he’s a foreign me I guess.”

Pitt basketball is something to be excited and encouraged about. All the haters seem to be absent.
