Preseason Bowl Prediction Pits Pitt Against National Title Competitor

If a recent 2024-25 bowl projection is accurate, Pitt will square off against a school that competed in the College Football Playoff last season.

Pitt went 3-9 last season and missed out on a bowl appearance for the first time since 2017 (in a non-COVID-19 season), but Bill Bender of Sporting News is projecting a bounceback for the Panthers.

Bender predicted the 2024-25 bowl season schedule and has Pitt facing off against Washington in the DirecTV Holiday Bowl on a to-be-determined date, which would be a major development next season. It would be a solid showing for the Panthers.

The Holiday Bowl has traditionally been a premier bowl for the Pac-12, featuring an ACC tie-in over the last handful of seasons, but with the collapse of the Pac-12, it seems likely that the ties will change.

Louisville fell to USC 42-28 in the most recent edition of the Holiday Bowl and Oregon knocked off North Carolina in the 2022 Holiday Bowl.

Washington is coming off an appearance in the College Football Playoff, losing to Michigan 34-13 in the national championship game, but a lot has changed since the Huskies walked off the field at NRG Stadium in Houston.

The Huskies have lost head coach Kalen DeBoer to Alabama, quarterback Michael Penix and just about every impact performer in the class. It’s a Huskies’ squad that has seen better days, but in the first days of the new Big Ten, the Huskies have to show out. And despite the appeal of the ACC, Pitt has to show out.

In looking at the Pitt schedule in 2024, it’s not exactly the toughest. In fact, the Panthers face one of the easiest schedules in the ACC entering the 2024 schedule.

If Washington, the same Huskies who entered the national title game last season, is the post-season opponent, the Panthers will have done well for themselves.

It is IMPERATIVE to win this year and compete in a bowl game. This team also must recruit with the purpose of not losing ANY talent to other schools. The road to the ACC Championship is difficult, but not impossible, and this team should set it’s sights on NOTHING less.
