2025 5-Star WR Includes Pitt in List of Top Schools

Winston Watkins Jr.

Pitt has made the cut for one of the top wide receivers in the class of 2025 — although, it’s a rather crowded list.

Winston Watkins Jr. — a 5-foot-10, 170-pound five-star wide receiver from First Baptist Academy in Naples, Fla. — cut his extensive list of offers in half on the Fourth of July, naming a top 16 that includes Colorado, South Carolina, Ohio State, Texas, Indiana, Penn State, Oregon, Florida, Ole Miss, Georgia, Syracuse, Michigan, Alabama and Tennessee.

It’s a large list, with some teams that have already formed more fleshed out relationships, but Pitt is a school that Watkin has checked out.

After originally committing to Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes on Dec. 4, 2022, Watkins reopened his recruitment late last year, which provided Pitt an opportunity to extend an offer on Jan. 12. And Watkins made it out to Pittsburgh during a spring tour, visiting the Panthers on March 21.

Watkins, who started his high school career at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., transferred to First Baptist last season. He racked up 61 catches for 1,170 yards and 13 touchdowns. He’s an undersized dynamo, fitting the same mold that Kade Bell has recruited extensively since arriving.

247Sports rates him as the 221st-ranked recruit in the class (26th-ranked wide receiver and 33rd-ranked recruit from Florida) while Rivals rates him as the 17th-ranked recruit in the class (second-ranked wide receiver and three-ranked recruit from Florida).

Watkins has taken official visits to Indiana, Ole Miss and South Carolina, which likely points to where he’s looking more intensely. It’s unlikely that his relationship with the Panthers will progress much further without an official visit — which wouldn’t occur until December.

Pitt holds 21 commitments in the class of 2025:

The Panthers have landed three-star quarterback Mason Heintschel (Oregon, Ohio), three-star running back Ja’Kyrian Turner (Bushnell, Fla.), three-star athlete Synkwan Smith (Roswell, Ga.), three-star wide receiver Kha’leal Sterling (Miami, Fla.), three-star wide receiver DaMarion Fowlkes (Olney, Md.), three-star wide receiver Tony Kinsler (Port Orange, Fla.), three-star wide receiver Bryce Yates (Chesterfield, Va.), three-star tight end Max Hunt (Tampa, Fla.), Shep Turk (Jefferson Hills, Pa.), Torian Chester (Albany, Ga.) and Akram Elnagmi (Loughborough, England), offensively.

And three-star edge Denim Cook (Columbus, Ohio), three-star defensive end Julian Anderson (Orlando, Fla.), three-star defensive lineman Trevor Sommers (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), three-star linebacker Emmanuel Taylor (Virginia Beach, Va.), three-star linebacker Justin Thompson (Olney, Md.), three-star safety Joshua Guerrier (Ocoee, Fla.), three-star cornerback Shawn Lee (Harrisburg, Pa.), three-star defensive back Cole Woodson (Haymarket, Va.), four-star cornerback Mason Alexander (Fishers, Ind.) and four-star cornerback Elijah Dotson (Detroit, Mich.) defensively.

Why is there even a column written on this?

“2027 WR drops his top 45 teams. Will announce his top 32 next year”

I guess to pretend we’re actually in on high level talent.

You don’t understand college football recruiting.

Coach Bell has initiated and developed a relationship with him. If coach Bell’s offense thrives and the team becomes a top ACC competitor again, this recruit will be attainable. What’s the option? Stop trying? If you keep listening to k.byrd’s comments, you will become as negative as he is.

What you seemed to have totally missed is that the post wasn’t about Bell, but rather these players that post HUGE amounts of their “top ______” teams. It’s how out of control recruiting has become.

I actually like the Bell hire. But he will need to show results this season to pull talent.

Come on man, keep up! Don’t flake out on us now!
