Everyone around the Pitt basketball program knows what Jaland Lowe can do on the basketball court.
After a stellar freshman season in which he started 19 games and averaged nearly 10 points per game, the Houston native is ready to break out in an even bigger fashion in his sophomore campaign. The hype around Lowe is not only coming from the local level, but also the national level.
On Saturday, ESPN listed Lowe as a potential breakout candidate in an article about college hoops.
“Lowe already had something of a breakout during the second half of 2023-24: In 19 games as Pitt’s starter last season, he averaged 13.1 points, 3.7 rebounds and 4.1 assists, shooting better than 40% from 3-point range,” ESPN’s Jeff Borzello said. “With Bub Carrington off to the NBA, Jeff Capel will need to replace his scoring and playmaking in the backcourt — and Lowe’s role should only increase, making him a legitimate all-conference performer.”
Two ACC players were listed in the article as potential player of the year candidates: Cooper Flagg (Duke) and RJ Davis (North Carolina).
Flagg, the number one overall player in 247 Sports’ 2025 rankings, has a perfect “100” rating on the popular rankings site. The 6-foot-9, 205-pound prospect plays for the basketball powerhouse Montverde Academy. He chose the Blue Devils over UConn, which he visited last September.
Flagg is from Newport, Maine, and has since showcased his talent all over the country since moving to Florida to play for Montverde. He now joins a new-look Duke roster that includes Caleb Foster, Tyrese Proctor, and newcomers Maliq Brown, Mason Gillis, Sion James, and others.
