Pitt secured a commitment Thursday from Auburn transfer infielder Gavin Miller, which allows the Oakdale, Pa. native to return home.
Miller — a 5-foot-11, 200-pound infielder who went to high school at West Allegheny — announced his commitment to Pitt on social media, simply writing, “Committed #h2p.” He spent the first two seasons of his collegiate career at Auburn.
Miller was once a top-rated recruit in the class of 2022, ranked as one of the best prep players in Pennsylvania.
Miller played first and third base at Auburn, serving as a top reserve and spot starter for the Tigers.
Miller was strong over the course of 26 appearances (making 15 starts) in 2023-24. He slashed .281/.361/.500 (batting average/on-base percentage/slugging) with 18 hits, smacking three home runs and nine RBI.
In two seasons with the Tigers, Miller hit .279 with three home runs, 11 RBI and 14 runs over 40 appearances (86 at-bats). He’s also played for the Alexandria Aces and Charlottesville Tom Sox in the Cal Ripken College League and Valley League, respectively.
Miller starred at West Allegheny in high school, ranked as the 249th-ranked player in the class by PerfectGame.com. He was named to the Beaver County Times All-Decade team and won the 2022 WPIAL championship at West A.
“Large, athletic frame with square shoulders and present physical strength proportioned throughout,” PerfectGame graded him. “Ran a 6.74 60-yard dash. Primary third baseman, takes short steps moving towards the ball, fields it out front with two hands, short and compact arm action through the backside, shows some carry across the diamond from a higher release point, can continue to refine overall footwork.
“Right-handed hitter, begins with a high hand set and back elbow at the plate. Sound swing mechanics and aggressive in the box, does a nice job of getting extended and generating lift out front. Best power to pull side with carry off of the barrel when squared, solid present bat speed through the zone, nice offensive tools overall.”
Pitt lost a few players to the MLB, including pitchers Phil Fox (Chicago White Sox) and Ryan Andrade (Tampa Bay Rays) in the 2024 MLB Draft. Fellow pitcher Jack Sokol signed with the New York Yankees following the draft.
Pitt went 26-29 (10-20 ACC) last season and lost to No. 1 seed North Carolina in the ACC Tournament.
We need to have the best players in our backyard stay and play for Pitt. These players get visions of grandeur from travel team coaches and see $$$$. Stay grounded and humble. Talent is talent and will be found by MLB. H2P🤑🤔💙💛
Oh, come on.
Love this baseball coverage. Need more of it!
