ACC Leading All NCAA Conferences in Olympic Medals

Weeks after the Paris Olympics began, the Atlantic Coast Conference is still leading the charge in terms of NCAA conferences with the most medals.

On Wednesday, Clemson’s Rojé Stona set an olympic record, throwing the discus 70 meters and winning the gold medal in the competition. Earlier in the day, Alysha Newman, a former Miami Hurricane’s track and field team member, earned a bronze medal for her Pole Vault jump of 4.85 meters. In addition, another track and field athlete from the conference, Mykolas Alekna out of Cal-Berkeley won the silver medal in discus with a 69.96 meter throw.

On Tuesday, former Notre Dame track standout Yared Nuguse earned the bronze medal in the men’s 1500-meter dash competition. Another Cal Golden Bear, this time Camryn Rogers, won a medal earlier in the week. Rogers took home the gold medal in women’s hammer throw.

Heading into Wednesday’s action, the ACC led all NCAA conferences in medals with 56. The SEC followed behind, and then the Big Ten, Big 12, Ivy League, Mountain West, MAAC, Pac 12, Sun Belt, and the West Coast Conference.

 

Another one of the new ACC member schools, Stanford is leading the conference to glory over in France. Former and current Stanford athletes have won 27 medals so far at the Paris Olympics, including nine gold medals, 12 silver medals, and six bronze.
