On Saturday afternoon in the 2024 Paris Olympics, Team USA took home the men’s basketball gold medal in an electric matchup against France.
The American squad looked to Stephen Curry, LeBron James, Kevin Durant and others for production in the 98-87 win, while France leaned on young NBA star Victor Wembanyama, who delivered 26 points.
In the final minutes, as Team USA fought to maintain its lead, Curry stepped up to the plate and dominated. He hit four three pointers in a 2-minute, 11-second span, electrifying the crowd and propelling the Americans to another gold medal.
Curry finished with 24 points on 8-for-13 shooting from beyond three-point range in the win, while James added 14 points, six rebounds, and ten assists and Durant contributed 15, four, and four. Former Kentucky star Devin Booker also shined for the U.S., adding 15 points, six rebounds, and three assists while shooting an efficient 6 for 9 from the floor (2 for 4 from three-point range).
After the game, Pitt players Jaland Lowe and Zack Austin took to Twitter to offer their quick thoughts on what many called a legendary finish to Team USA’s gold-medal run.
Pitt’s sophomore point guard, Lowe, is coming off an outstanding freshman campaign in which he averaged 9.6 points and 3.3 assists per game for the Panthers. Lowe had 17 games in double figures (scoring-wise), and even dropped 17 points, four rebounds, and four assists in Pitt’s final game of the season in the ACC Tournament against North Carolina.
Austin is heading into year two in the Pitt program as well, after transferring from High Point a year ago. Austin started 31 games for Pitt last season, averaging more than six points per game along with 4.2 rebounds and 1.3 blocks.
The France and Serbia games were two of the most enjoyable sporting events I have ever watched. Curry is basketball God!!
