PITTSBURGH — Pitt football locked in for its first fall camps scrimmage this past Saturday and allowed players on both sides of the ball an opportunity to understand how far they’ve come since the spring and how much more work needs done.

It was the defense that came up victorious and was led by two takeaways from safeties P.J. O’Brien Jr. and Cruce Brookins.

The media had an opportunity to speak with some of the Panthers who are expected to make crucial impacts on the team this year on Tuesday, post-scrimmage.

Western Carolina running back Desmond Reid and senior wide receiver Konata Mumpfield provided some insight on how the offense looked despite coming out on the losing end. Mumpfield labeled the offense “lightyears ahead of where we were” from the spring.

Reid and Mumpfield highlighted some of the errors the offense made during the scrimmage, including false starts and working through the new system.

On the other hand, linebacker Kyle Louis and defensive tackle Isaiah “Ghost” Neal shed some light on how the defense held up. A big piece of the defense that continues to be vocalized is increased aggression and that includes blitzing, getting into the backfield and disrupting the play.

Louis, a redshirt sophomore, and Neal, a redshirt freshman, will both be pivotal pieces on the defensive side of the ball and are showcasing their leadership characteristics.
