All 105 is a Pittsburgh Sports Now series profiling each of the 105 members of the Pitt 2024 training camp roster.
Kenny Johnson, a sophomore wide receiver from Dallastown in York, Pa.
2023 season: Johnson played in all 12 games during his true freshman season, making three starts at wide receiver — and kickoff returner
Stats: Johnson recorded 15 receptions for 122 yards and a touchdown, 10 rushes for 72 yards and 15 kick returns for 347 yards and a touchdown last season
Camp outlook: Johnson is working with the 1s during his second fall camp, serving as a key contributor and emerging leader within the wide receiving corps
Projected role: Johnson is in line for a breakout season, returning for his second season with a new mentality and a full offseason under his belt. Johnson will be one of the starting outside wideouts
Kenny Johnson (6-foot-1, 200 pounds) was initially an in-state win for the Panthers, landing him over offers from Penn State, Rutgers, West Virginia, Boston College, Cincinnati, Louisville, Minnesota, Virginia Tech and Wisconsin in the class of 2023.
It took a couple of weeks for Johnson to work into the lineup last season, with just 22 offensive snaps over the first three weeks of the season, but once he did, he did a little bit of everything. He carried the ball 10 times for 72 yards, caught 15 passes for 122 yards and a touchdown and returned 15 kickoffs for 347 yards (23.1 yards per return) and a touchdown — a 100-yard return against North Carolina.
And he’s gearing up for a true breakout season within the new offensive system.
“My goal this season is for us to be dominant, I want to go into every game and be dominant,” Johnson said on Pitt Media Day in July. “Even if we lose, I want to dominate. I want to try to make every team we play quit.”
Johnson will be a Pitt starter in 2024, alongside Konata Mumpfield and Daejon Reynolds. Poppi Williams, Censere Lee, Lamar Seymore and Zion Fowler-El are also in line for increased playing time.
