Mason Heintschel has played three games in his senior season, and it’s fair to say he’s one of the most electric quarterbacks in Ohio.
Heinstchel had a “down” week in a loss to Whitmer over the weekend, completing 18-of-29 pass attempts for 187 yards with two touchdowns and an interception — adding 84 yards on 13 carries. But even a “down” week is a strong showing for Heintschel.

He’s completed 54-of-79 pass attempts (67%) for 679 yards with 12 touchdowns and three interceptions through three games. And he hasn’t finished every game. He’s also added 31 carries for 216 yards (7 yards per carry) and a couple more touchdowns. It’s been a season in which Heintchel has showcased his effortless arm talent and athleticism.
Heintschel is off to a great start in his senior season. And once he wraps it up, he’ll be headed to Pittsburgh on a more permanent basis — after checking out the Pitt win against Kent State in the season opener.
Secondary coach Archie Collins began the relationship and first extended an offer earlier this year, but it was the relationship with offensive coordinator Kade Bell that made the difference.
“It’s been awesome,” Heintschel said when he committed. “We’ve been able to build a really strong relationship, we call each other all the time and it’s just been one of those things where it’s right. I’ve known since we’ve been able to build this relationship that it’s the right move for me. And the fact that we’ve been able to grow so close together in this short amount of time has definitely played a big role in this decision.”
Bell runs an up-tempo offense that relies upon the quarterback making quick decisions. It’s designed to be innovative and explosive, but it also relies upon the quarterback to make good decisions — either with his arm or his legs. Heintschel is the type of quarterback who plays a backyard style of ball, making plays on the move with his arm and legs.
Heintschel carried Clay High as a junior, racking up over 3,000 yards of total offense and 33 touchdowns despite a lackluster offensive line in front of him and his versatile skillset attracted the Pitt coaching staff. He’s a tailor-made fit who has only continued to show his fit through his senior season.
247Sports rates Mason Heintschel as the 42nd-ranked quarterback and 31st-ranked recruit from Ohio while On3 rates him as the 65th-ranked quarterback and 45th-ranked recruit from Ohio. Rivals has given him a 5.6 Rivals Rating.
Some of those secondary’s couldn’t cover peewee football players. He moves pretty well keeps his head down field most of those passes were coverage mistakes more than anything and I question his arm strength he didn’t throw one further than forty yards in the air but he does extend plays well seems to play better when he’s just running around avoiding defenders. Throws a good ball under 20 yards very accurate but I question his ability to stretch the field at the power 4 level. He’ll need a few years to develop but he might be solid in the long… Read more »
Marty I saw a kid spreading the ball around efficiently and keeping his eyes downfield. Good accurate throws. That’s all you need in Kade Bells offense. Loved the highlights
I said some positive things I don’t think he’s awful but go look at the offers it’s very concerning that not one other power 4 school offered. He has a few Mac offers, eastern kentucky, Coastal Carolina and his best other offer is Liberty. So that’s not exactly encouraging and if any big ten school offered I’m sure he’d consider it. I think he picked Pitt for two reason we missed on all the top qb prospects and it was his best offer by a country mile.
Marty I understand the angst. We’re all Pitt fans after all. However, these rankings/offers are entirely bullshit. Just gotta hit the right players, not the best players….
Kid was electric tonight against Findlay. Had to have 150 yards rushing including three long ones. Arm looked good on a couple of deeper throws including a sure TD that the receiver had go off his hands. Mason even showed a strong leg on a couple of punts.
