Derek Dixon is closing in on a college commitment.
The four-star prospect out of Gonzaga Prep in Washington, D.C. is strongly considering Pitt, North Carolina, and other schools including Virginia and Syracuse. After a few weeks of visit-watching as Dixon took trips to some of his top schools, we finally have some more news on his recruitment.
On Thursday, Dixon cancelled his previously-scheduled visit to Arizona, according to Travis Branham of 247 Sports.
Last weekend, Dixon was in Chapel Hill, North Carolina taking his official visit to Hubert Davis’ Tar Heels. His commitment date is set for Sept. 27 — his birthday.

Dixon has visited Pitt’s campus three times — twice unofficially and once officially, and still communicates with the staff frequently. This summer, playing for Team Takeover, he led his team deep into the Nike EYBL Peach Jam playoffs, in front of Jeff Capel, Milan Brown, and hundreds of other coaches in attendance. Now, this week, Capel and Brown visited him at Gonzaga.
The 6-foot-5 guard is fielding a loaded recruitment that is now down to just six schools: North Carolina, Arizona, Pitt, Syracuse, Virginia, and Vanderbilt. He is ranked as the No. 51 prospect in America, per 247 Sports.
Earlier this summer, on an episode of The Pittsburgh Basketball Show, Dixon joined the show to talk about his recruitment, where Pitt stands, his relationships with Brown and Capel, and much more. Dixon gives a recruitment timeline in the interview, and also talks about two more upcoming visits to programs that are not in the ACC.
