On Wednesday, Pitt basketball landed its first commitment in the high-school class of 2025, adding Omari Witherspoon, a guard out of Washington, D.C.
Witherspoon announced his commitment live on 247 Sports’ YouTube channel, but at the same time as he announced, the Panthers’ team social media page posted a new video designed for this exact purpose with the caption: “Got ‘Em #H2P.”
The video begins with a clip of head coach Jeff Capel saying “Yeah, we got him” in a press conference. The video then shows highlights and celebration videos of Pitt players Ishmael Leggett, Zack Austin, LeVance Fields, Blake Hinson, Guillermo Diaz Graham, Bub Carrington, and many others. In addition, the video showcases the Oakland Zoo.
Lastly, to end the video, Pitt included a clip of Carrington speaking while at his NBA Draft announcement press conference.
“If you want a coach that’s really just going to believe in you and a culture that’s always welcoming you, why go anywhere else?” asked Carrington.
Witherspoon is a 6-foot-4 guard out of Saint John’s College Prep in D.C. — the same high school that current Pitt Panther Ishmael Leggett went to. Witherspoon received an offer from the Panthers in July, and weeks later, narrowed his recruiting list down to ten schools. He then visited several schools on his list, including West Virginia, Maryland, and finally, Pitt, before cutting his list down to just three schools. Now, he has locked in on the Panthers and becomes the first prospect in the class of 2025 to verbally commit to Pitt.

Congratulations to HC Capel & his Staff for another potentially great recruit from the DC area! Need to continue this pipeline from DC to PIT for basketball recruiting. Hopefully Omari can assist with some bigs from his AAU connections & get PITT another Wing & Center in the 2025 Class. It would also be nice to bring Meleek Thomas back ‘home’. Pitt could then continue running a 3 guard offense with 2 front line bigs in a fast paced offensive scheme.
