The first three weeks of the high school football season is significant when it comes to recruiting and that includes WPIAL football players. Film from those three contests allows evaluators and coaches to see how a player truly thrives in game competition.
For one local player who is already committed to an ACC school, those three games paid dividends, bringing in two Power Four offers, including his first from the SEC.
Bradley Gompers — a 6-foot-5, 215-pound receiver/tight end/linebacker from Central Catholic High School — picked up two offers in quick succession from Ole Miss and North Carolina State on Wednesday. The offer from Ole Miss comes as his first from the SEC.
While Gompers adds those enticing offers, he is verbally committed to Duke. In June, Gompers selected the Blue Devils over a top seven that also included Pitt, West Virginia, Michigan State, Maryland, Northwestern and Rutgers.
There’s a reason that more schools are coming along in Gompers’ recruitment after an impressive start to his senior season that has showcased why he is one of the top all-around players in the area.
In the season opener against national high school power St. Frances (Md.), Gompers made plays all over the field, totaling 16 tackles and hauling in four receptions that went for 98 yards (24.5 yards per catch). Despite the loss, Gompers showed that he could keep up with other college-level talent.
Against Pine-Richland in Week 2, Gompers caught four passes that went for 124 yards (31 yards per catch) and a touchdown.
In Central Catholic’s first win of the season over Woodland Hills, Gompers pulled in a 38-yard touchdown from Jy’Aire Walls in the first quarter before leaving the game with an injury.
Through the first three games of the season, Gompers has racked up 283 receiving yards on eight receptions, along with two touchdowns. Defensively, he has registered 25 total tackles and two tackles for loss.
It won’t be a surprise if more Division I programs come calling for Gompers as he continues to post impressive numbers and make big-time plays.
