Just one day after locking up a verbal commitment from 2025 prospect Omari Witherspoon, the Pitt basketball staff was right back on the road, working to earn another commitment in the class.
Pitt head coach Jeff Capel and Milan Brown went to see Witherspoon on Thursday in D.C., and while in the area, also made the trip to see Derek Dixon, the next target on the staff’s recruiting wish list.
Dixon, the No. 51 player in the 2025 class, is one of the highest-ranked prospects left on Pitt’s board, and has been building a strong relationship with the Pitt staff, specifically Capel and Brown, for over two years now. He has visited Pitt three times — twice for unofficial visits and once for an official — and has Pitt in his top six.
Dixon is also strongly considering North Carolina, among other schools. The latest in his recruitment is the news of his cancellation of the Arizona visit — his previously scheduled final trip. Now, on the same day that he cancelled that Arizona visit, Pitt’s Capel and Brown went to see him.
Dixon is scheduled to commit on Sept. 27, his birthday.
When Witherspoon announced his commitment to Pitt, Dixon left a congratulatory “Nice” comment on his Instagram post. Witherspoon then replied, attempting to recruit Dixon to join him in the future Panthers’ back court.

With over two years of communication and relationship building, three visits to Pitt, numerous visits to D.C. to see Dixon, and more, the Panthers appear to be doing all they can to court the talented D.C. prospect.
