‘Terrible Football Players’: Former WVU Kicker Pat McAfee Takes Shot at Pitt

Former West Virginia kicker Pat McAfee

PITTSBURGH — Pitt fans are well-acquainted with former West Virginia kicker turned media mogul Pat McAfee. If not for his time at ESPN now then, most notably, for his role in the 2007 Backyard Brawl.

The Plum native was a four-year starter at West Virginia and spent eight seasons with the Indianapolis Colts in the NFL, and he’s certainly a loud voice in the college football landscape, especially when it comes to West Virginia.

So, of course, he talked about the Backyard Brawl on College GameDay Saturday morning. And he wasn’t too kind to Pitt.

“The thing about this game is there are players — let’s just say Pitt, for instance — who accomplished absolutely nothing in their careers, won zero bowl games, got blown out, no conference titles,” McAfee said on ESPN. “Terrible college players is how people would describe their stories. If they beat West Virginia though, all of a sudden they’re heroes forever around Oakland in Pitt’s campus.

“Same thing for West Virginia even though we normally accomplished a lot of things. I’ve obviously been on both ends of this entire thing and your entire career’s legacy can really rely on this game. Talking for experience, I hope the Mountaineers get a big-time dub. If they don’t, Neal Brown is going to — Neal needs to win this one.”

McAfee went 2-2 against Pitt during his time in Morgantown, W.Va., and he connected on 2-of-5 field attempts and all 16 of his point-after attempts. But two of those misses came in the infamous 2007 Backyard Brawl.

McAfee missed two field goals (20 and 32 yards) in a 13-9 loss that likely kept West Virginia out of the national championship game.

So, it is fair to say that Pat McAfee knows a bit about the Backyard Brawl defining a legacy.

The Brawl is scheduled to kick off at 3:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon, with ESPN2 broadcasting the matchup for those who will not be in attendance. With an announced sellout crowd, 70,623 fans would set a new sporting attendance record in Pittsburgh.
