To go along with renovations that are set to begin at Neil C. Brown Stadium in the City of Clairton, it will be undergoing a name change as well. It will soon be named after legendary Clairton Bear and current NFL wide receiver: Tyler Boyd Stadium.
Boyd starred for Clairton football from 2009-12, leading his team to a 63-1 record in that span, along with winning four straight WPIAL and PIAA Class 1A titles. He then went on to play three seasons for the Pitt Panthers and has embarked on a nine-year NFL career.
“When you talk about football, most stadiums are named after probably one of the best players that ever played or one of the best coaches that ever coached. You could put Tyler in that category for everything that he did at both the high school and college level in the same state. He’s in his ninth year in the NFL,” longtime Clairton head coach Wayne Wade told Pittsburgh Sports Now.
The renaming of the stadium was made official at the Clairton School Board Legislative meeting on Monday night. The name was already previously approved and has been in consideration for several months, Wade said.
“It means a lot in the community to be able to watch a kid play his ball here and then name the stadium after him,” Wade said.
It is part of a two-phase renovation project that is set to take way in the coming weeks. Clairton played its final football game at Neil C. Brown Stadium on Friday as it will now play home games at Thomas Jefferson High.

Phase one will feature a new turf field, new bleachers, new lighting and a scoreboard and is expected to be complete by December of 2024, allowing the team to play at home once again for the 2025 season.
As for phase two, it all relies on fundraising.
“Phase two depends on the fundraising campaign. Phase two is tearing down the home side bleachers and building a new field house with brand new locker rooms,” Wade said.
According to a report from the Pittsburgh Union Progress in Aug. of 2023, the project is estimated to cost roughly $6.6 million.
Boyd has been a fixture in the Clairton community as he still visits and gives back to the Bears program and youth levels.
“He’s done some things for us as far as getting equipment, buying us uniforms and he started his first couple camps,” Wade said. “He got summer camps for teaching kids fundamentals. A lot of the Clairton kids attend the camp.
“He was here about a month or so ago around camp to visit. He’s still actively involved,” Wade added.

Once Boyd’s playing days were over with the Bears, he held the record for most touchdowns in WPIAL history with 117 and ranked fifth in rushing yards with 5,755 yards.
One of the greatest players in Western Pennsylvania history, Boyd was named to the WPIAL Hall of Fame Class of 2024.
As a highly-touted recruit out of high school, Boyd decided to stay home and play for the Pitt Panthers, where he put together a remarkable collegiate career.
In three seasons with the Panthers, Boyd set records for all-time receptions (254) and receiving yards (3,361) and sits tied for sixth in program history with 21 touchdowns.
Boyd was drafted in the second round of the 2016 NFL draft by the Cincinnati Bengals. From 2016-2023, Boyd was one of the most reliable receivers for the Bengals, pulling in 513 receptions for 6,000 yards and 31 touchdowns.
This summer, Boyd signed a one-year contract worth up to $4.5 million with the Tennessee Titans.
Clairton football has won 14 WPIAL football titles — second most all-time to Aliquippa’s 20. The Bears have also added four PIAA titles. Boyd was a key part of their 66-game win streak that stands as a state record.
You rarely see a stadium named for someone before they even finish their career. That’s nice for Boyd of course but they made that decision much sooner than I certainly would have expected.
yup. well deserved, but too soon. Should have waited until he retired from NFL.
He paid for it so he should name it. 💰💰💰💰💰💰🙏🇺🇸💙💛
“Getting equipment” and buying uniforms is not exactly paying for the stadium for someone whose career earnings are $50 million.
Yes, there is that 6.6 million hanging in the balance. He could raise that between he and some of his NFL peers. Then, definitely, his name should be up there.
