247 Sports released its updated rankings for the class of 2025 last week, minutes before Omari Witherspoon committed to Pitt.
Witherspoon chose the Panthers over Maryland and Vanderbilt. Earlier this summer, the 6-foot-4 guard was not entirely on high-major radars. However, with a big summer session, he caught the eyes of many high-major coaches and scouts alike.
In 247’s latest rankings update, the team of scouts there had Witherspoon ranked as the No. 104 prospect in the country — a four star. Witherspoon jumped up a whopping 87 spots in 247’s rankings, as he was previously ranked No. 191. He now owns a 90 overall rating from 247.
“…If you watch him with his Saint John’s team, obviously, you see him with his AAU team D.C. Premier, he’s going to do a lot of the ball handling, the majority of it,” 247’s Colby Giacubeno told PSN about Witherspoon’s game. “Saint John’s, he’s going to split it up. That’s where you can really see the versatility. That’s where a lot of the high-major programs really saw his value. The modern-day of the basketball, what teams are emphasizing. It’s versatility, position-less basketball, and that’s what Omari brings. He’s just an efficient playmaker. He’s got the size at the guard position, and then just really good instincts off the ball defensively. Presence on the glass. Just kind of a do-it-all guard that just needs polish in pretty much every area that a lot of freshmen do…”
Pitt is still recruiting other guards in the class, including Meleek Thomas, Derek Dixon, Amari Evans, and others.
Coach Capel and staff are getting the job done big time. H2P!
