Cal will fly to Pittsburgh for a late afternoon kickoff in a couple of weeks against the Pitt Panthers.
The ACC announced Monday that Pitt and Cal will kick off at Acrisure Stadium at 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 12. The game will be broadcast on either ESPN or ACC Network, and additional information about the broadcast will be released at a later date.
Pitt has a chance to go to Chapel Hill, N.C. this weekend and knock off North Carolina on the road for the first time in program history. A win against the Tar Heels would set Pitt up to enter the matchup as a ranked opponent for the first time in a couple of years.
Pitt is 1-2 all-time against Cal, but all three meetings came before 1970. The last meeting was a 30-15 win for the Golden Bears in Berkeley, Cal.
Cal is 3-1 through the first third of the season, knocking off UC Davis, Auburn and San Diego State. The Golden Bears dropped their inaugural ACC matchup against Florida State two weekends ago and were off last weekend.
Pitt is coming off the bye week, too, and for the first time in a while, the Panthers are undefeated. But Pat Narduzzi certainly isn’t satisfied with starting the season strong.
“It doesn’t really matter,” Pat Narduzzi said after the YSU win. “You think about it, it’s 4-0, one at a time. North Carolina is the only thing on my mind right now is where we are there. I guess first time in history of Pitt football that we’re undefeated in the preseason (non-conference), and preseason is over now.
“We’re moving to ACC play and North Carolina, they’re on the clock for us, and we’ve got two weeks to prepare and get fresh and get ready to roll.”
Pitt is still 4-0 for the first time since 2000, going undefeated in non-conference play for the first time in program history, and the vibes in Pittsburgh are pretty good — even for Narduzzi.
Pitt and Cal in a couple of weeks will be a good clash between two (new) conference opponents who haven’t played in decades.
