A hit along the sidelines escalated into a benches-clearing altercation with just over a minute to play in the third quarter of Westinghouse football’s 43-6 win over the USO Wildcats on Friday, Oct. 11.

The inciting play took place along the Wildcats’ sideline. As a dust-up developed, Westinghouse’s sideline cleared, with players rushing across the field to back up their teammates and join the fray. Sporadic sparring ensued, with a handful of players from both teams shoving each other or ending up on the ground.

Coaches and officials managed to de-escalate the situation quickly and the game clock, which had stopped after the initial whistle, began to run again. With Westinghouse leading by 37 points, the mercy rule was in effect when the altercation began.

At least one referee threw a flag during the scuffle, but no penalties were announced as the coaches and officials took stock of the situation. Play never resumed and the clock eventually ran out, ending the game and leading players to exit the field.

Pittsburgh Sports Now asked Karen Arnold, the City League’s Director of Interscholastic Athletics, about the decision to bring the game to an early end. Arnold said, “It was my decision” to end the game.

USO and Westinghouse met in last year’s City League Championship game, which the Bulldogs won handily, 42-14. This year’s City League Playoffs are set to begin next week and with Westinghouse (6-1, 4-0 City League) and USO (3-4, 3-1 City League) both amongst the top four teams in their division, there’s an excellent chance that they’ll face off again in the next two weeks.
