Leading Syracuse Pass Catcher Questionable for Pitt Matchup

Syracuse has had a diverse passing attack with quarterback Kyle McCord under center, but his top pass catcher is uncertain for Thursday night’s game against Pitt.

Trebor Pena — a 6-foot, 185-pound wideout from Ocean Township, N.J. (the same high school as Kenny Pickett) — is day-to-day after suffering an injury in a win against North Carolina State last weekend, head coach Fran Brown said Tuesday morning during a radio appearance.

Pena’s status will be determined by how well he was able to practice during Tuesday’s practice — with another Brown press conference Tuesday night to update his status.

Pena has caught a team-leading 42 passes for 458 yards (10.9 yards per reception) and five touchdowns in six games this season, returning to the lineup after missing all but one game last season.

He’s been one of McCord’s most reliable underneath pass catchers, hauling in 31 of his 35 targets short of the sticks this season, as shared by Chris Carlson of The Syracuse.

Pena is dealing with a couple of injuries following the NC State game, which includes his head and legs.

If Pena is unable to go, further work will likely fall to wide receiver Jackson Meeks and tight end Oronde Gadsen II — and running back LeQuint Allen. Pat Narduzzi has been very complimentary of McCord in the buildup to the rivalry game.

McCord is one of the top passers in the nation at the halfway point, having completed 185-of-282 pass attempts (65.6%) for 2,160 yards with 19 touchdowns and six interceptions.

Pat Narduzzi certainly respects the threat McCord poses to his defense.

“That one transfer quarterback, that Kyle McCord, is a tremendous football player,” Narduzzi said Friday. “If you’re not a Pitt fan, if you’re not a Syracuse fan, but you’re a quarterback fan, you should get your tickets now because that guy is going to play in the National Football League.

“We watched him on third down the other day. I don’t know if he throws an incomplete pass, especially on third and medium. He throws darts. He’s accurate. He’s smart. He knows where to go with the ball. He will be the best quarterback that’s walked in to play us in this stadium in a while. So, we got a great chore ahead for us to defend him and a slew of really good receivers.”

They may have to give him some Pena medication.
