Westinghouse Secures City League Three-Peat Behind Four Lloyd Penn Touchdowns

PITTSBURGH— The Westinghouse Bulldogs secured their third straight City League Championship on Saturday, October 26, riding a 28 point second half rally to overcome the Allderdice Dragons 40-12.

Senior receiver Lloyd Penn, who has an offer from Miami of Ohio, snagged four touchdown receptions, while the Bulldogs’ defense hauled in three interceptions. Westinghouse forced two turnovers near midfield in the opening six minutes, a fumble recovery and a turnover on downs following a low snap, but they came away with only a 5-yard Penn receiving touchdown to show for it, struggling to finish drives.

Bulldogs quarterback Khalil Green appeared to find junior receiver K’Shawn Hawkins for a 13-yard touchdown midway through the second quarter, but a penalty wiped the score off the board. Allderdice managed to stay within a score, eventually wrapping Green up on fourth-and-2 from their own five.

The ensuing Dragons’ drive went nowhere and a short punt backed them up, setting up another touchdown catch for Penn, this one from 16 yards out. Penn caught the ball at the goal line, fighting off contact and double-clutching to break the plane. Quarterback Mekhi Butler found the end zone from nine yards out on a keeper, then the Dragons executed a surprise onside kick to get the ball back at midfield.

After Butler and Green traded interceptions, Dragons head coach Mark Matson reached back into the bag of tricks, calling a fake punt on fourth-and-one from deep in his own territory. Butler linked up with Brandon Beechum on a 65-yard deep shot touchdown, and a missed PAT sent them to the half knotted 12-12.

Westinghouse began to pull away in the third quarter, first with a 43-yard touchdown run from Khalil Mitchell, then with a 23-yard reception from Penn up the seam that saw the first converted PAT of the game, putting the Bulldogs ahead 25-12.

Sophomore tailback Dameon Hill scored on a three-yard tote with just under seven minutes to play, set up by an 81-yard catch-and-run from Jaylen Stanford that saw Penn hauling downfield to block for him. Stanford set up another touchdown on the following drive, snagging an interception that led to a 37-yard touchdown for Penn.

Westinghouse will host the winner of the PIAA’s District 5 in a subregional in the 1A bracket on November 15 or 16. The Dragons will also advance to a subregional, playing in the 5A bracket and facing an opponent from District 6, 9 or 10 the weekend of November 8.
