Former Pitt DE Dayon Hayes Underwent Surgery at Colorado

Former Pitt defensive end Dayon Hayes

It appears that former Pitt defensive end Dayon Hayes may have played his final snaps this season at Colorado.

Hayes — a 6-foot-3, 250-pound defensive end from Westinghouse in Pittsburgh, Pa. — posted on X (formerly known as Twitter) that he underwent surgery. The exact cause is uncertain, but he hasn’t played since Sept. 21 against Baylor.

“This year brought a lot of wins this L ain’t changing nothing though,” Hayes wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter).

Hayes left Pitt earlier this year following four seasons with the Panthers.

Hayes played in four games this season for Colorado, potentially preserving another season of eligibility, and he recorded 163 defensive snaps over the first four weeks of the season. According to PFF, he recorded four pressures and three hurries — adding 10 run stops.

He’s racked up 16 tackles (10 solo), four tackles for loss and two sacks this season.

It’s uncertain whether Hayes, who played five seasons at Pitt (including the COVID season in 2020), will be able to return for another season in Colorado.

He finished his Pitt career with 81 tackles (45 solo), 26.5 tackles for loss, 13 sacks, three forced fumbles and five pass breakups over four seasons — emerging as a starter in 2023.

In wake of Hayes (and Samuel Okunlola) leaving for Colorado over the offseason, Pitt has been able to work its younger defensive ends into the rotation alongside transfer veteran Nate Matlack. Jimmy Scott, Sincere Edwards and Chief Borders have all worked into increased roles this season.

Colorado is 6-2 (4-1 Big 12) and ranked 23rd in the latest AP Poll.

Even though I think he made a poor decision in leaving Pitt I can’t trash an injured player. Injuries are unfortunately part of the game however.

Wish him a quick recovery and all the best moving forward.
