The college basketball season kicked off this week, with all six division one local teams in action.

The Pitt men took down Radford by a score of 96-56 on Monday night behind strong games from Jaland Lowe and Ishmael Leggett. Cam Corhen, Damian Dunn, and Brandin “Beebah” Cummings had solid games as well, scoring in double figures. The Panthers shut down the Highlanders behind a strong late first-half push and never looked back. Duquesne men’s basketball fell to Lipscomb on opening night. Transfers Tre Dinkins, Max Edwards, and Jahsean Corbett led the way offensively. Dukes didn’t get much on the offensive end out of the other three starters. Overall a very close game and the Dukes showed lots of heart coming back into the game but sloppy play in the later minutes proved costly. Robert Morris fell to West Virginia in Morgantown after getting off to an ice-cold start. The Colonials looked to Josh Omojafo, Ismael Plet, and D.J. Smith for production, but star transfer Kam Woods struggled to the tune of 3-for-16 shooting in the lopsided loss.

The Duquesne women’s team defeated Princeton on Monday night behind star guard Megan McConnell, who scored 24 points and made big play after big play in the victory. McConnell, as well as Nadia Moore and Jerni Kiaku, led the Dukes to the 1-0 start to the year. Pitt’s women’s team took down Canisius on Tuesday behind Texas transfer Khadija Faye. Faye, on her birthday, scored 25 and grabbed 12 rebounds. She looks like a very solid addition through the portal and will give Pitt an offensive presence inside as well as a consistent rebounder. To wrap up the opening games, Robert Morris’ women’s team beat Point Park on Wednesday night. Ten different players scored for the Colonials, led by Raissa Nsabua and Danielle Vuletich.
