Vukovcan: Flat Out Disappointed by Pitt Football

Published

on

Pitt football.

Disappointing.

I’m not sure there’s a more appropriate word to describe last night along with what it likely means for the future.

A famous cliche coaches like to use is “We probably aren’t as good as we played when we win or as bad when we lose.”

Unfortunately for Pitt, as the season has progressed, this team, and the offense in particular, has come back to earth and in reality, they were fortunate to be 7-0.

That’s not to take away or discredit anything that they accomplished — just, it got everyone excited and certainly raised the expectations for the remainder of the season.

10-win season? ACC championship game? College Football Playoff? Unfortunately, none of that is going to happen, and that’s disappointing.

What makes it most disappointing was the all-around performance, or lack thereof, in last night’s season-killing game against an average Virginia team.

The reality is that if Pitt was indeed a playoff worthy or ACC championship caliber team, considering what happened a week prior against SMU, the Panthers would’ve blown the doors off Virginia, and it wouldn’t and shouldn’t have been a game.

As it turned out, it was a close game and one in which they lost. I’m going to say something that I’m sure won’t go over well, but it’s the truth.

Unlike most people, including Pat Narduzzi, I’m not going to whine about the blown call. Was it awful, and did it hurt Pitt’s chances? Yes, no doubt.

Pitt football head coach Pat Narduzzi.

But it wasn’t the main factor. The Panthers lost because they came out flatter than piss on a plate, they lost because the offense continues to struggle, they lost because their offensive line is very much a problem, and they lost because of the large number of penalties they continue to accumulate.

And as WWE Hall of Famer Stone Cold Steve Austin would say, “That’s the bottom line.”

One quick point that everyone is ignoring and while the focus has been on ACC head referee Nate Black and his crew, people should be complaining about the fact that, prior to that blown call, Pitt had the opportunity to get the ball back in excellent field position and failed.

After cutting Virginia’s deficit to 21-19, Pitt had Virginia staring at a third-and-15 from their own 20-yard line. If Pitt stops them, they likely get the ball back in ideal field position and with a chance to kick the go-ahead field goal.

Instead, the Panthers allowed a 25-yard completion to a quarterback that showed no ability to throw the ball downfield. I have no idea why they sent an all-out blitz and didn’t just drop players back and force the Cavaliers to throw into a loaded coverage or just throw underneath and let them pick up 7-8 yards.

To me, that play was just as much a killer as the blown call by Black.

People are assuming that if the ref made the correct call and awarded Pitt the ball after a fourth-and-1 stop that they were just going to march down the field and score. I have no idea why that is the prevailing thought considering everything they saw from the Pitt offense prior to. Of Pitt’s four scoring drives, two happened because they took over in Virginia territory, not because they were able to drive the length of the field.

So, instead of referencing ‘iPads’ and coming into his press conference blaming referees, Narduzzi needed to come in pissed off at his players and coaches, including taking a hard look in the mirror at himself.

There’s no good excuse for what took place last night, especially from what we saw in the first quarter, where we saw countless false start and holding penalties. When your offense — your quarterback, in particular — is struggling, asking them to continually convert first-and-15 or 20 isn’t ideal.

The other thing that doesn’t help the offense or the confidence of the quarterback is the continued drop passes by the wide receivers. They’ve all shown that they have ability, that’s simply a concentration and lack of focus. Not going to blame the coaches for that one, that’s 100% on the players.

An aspect of the coaching that can be questioned is the offensive gameplan and I’ll go into detail on this in a future commentary, but first-year offensive coordinator Kade Bell has to figure some things out and make adjustments because what he’s doing clearly hasn’t been working for weeks.

I know he wants to play fast and ‘Go Go Go’ but they’ve been stuck in quicksand, and he needs to make adjustments. Defenses know exactly what Pitt is attempting to do and last night in particular, Virginia had their safeties so close to the line of scrimmage, almost daring Pitt to throw deep. Instead, Pitt’s passing game continues to go sideline to sideline instead of vertically. With all the pressure the opposing defenses are bringing, when was the last time you saw a reverse or jet sweep?

To borrow a quote from Steelers Hall of Fame Coach Chuck Noll, “Pitt’s problems on offense are many and they are great.”

The second half of the season is when good teams are playing their best football, but that’s not happening with Pitt.

The Panthers still have a record of 7-2, but there are three challenging games remaining against Clemson, Louisville and Boston College.

Unless this team is able to fix these offensive woes and play with some passion and focus, this once promising season is quickly going to turn into one where a lot of questions are going to be raised and plenty of fingers being pointed.

its not just the offense although that is what was apparent last night, its a defense that has made its share of breakdowns and special teams that are abysmal. One Punt last night was not fielded and it bounces 20+ yards downfield. Another blocked FG. Punts that were awful again, and a dropped snap in punt formation….the list goes on. Bad coaching and Narduzzi is the common denominator Some of these 6th year transfers shouldn’t be on the field.

MIKE: Can you PLEASE ask Narduzzi a question for me? Has he ever looked at the stats of letting punted balls hit the ground, I HAVE! I’ve been writing about this for a few years. The stats show that when a punted ball hits the ground, it bounces forward (unless a pouch punt), over 75% of the time. Sometimes over 25 yards. This happened last night when Pitt had momentum, in the second half, but Va hit a 65 yd punt (no return) to completely turn field position. There is a very simple way to overcome this. PUT 2 GUYS… Read more »

Well said. Narduzzi can’t ever see why they lost. He’ll blame it on a bad call on the fourth and 1 but in truth it’s because he flat out can’t coach never makes adjustments mid game. He’s a terrible recruiter he’s not the reason players come here most of the time he sounds like an incompetent fool with a mic in his face. The fact you can’t win championships recruiting group of 5 level wrs and o linemen. It’s beyond pathetic most of you thought these guys had any clue recruiting.

Cade Bell is being exposed as well let’s not let him off the hook. Most of this eye candy motion is not fooling a soul. He runs these stupid short pass concepts with eye candy all game it leads to fall starts and short gains. I get he’s working with low level players for the most part at the skilled positions and the o line is awful everyone of them should pack up and good play in the mac wish them well out the door. Baer is awful slowest most unatheltic tackle I’ve seen in years. He’s supposedly a four… Read more »

It’s hard for any QB to throw the ball down the field when your offensive line is a sieve. As a result we only have time for quick hitters or lateral throws. We also have zero running game because we’re not opening holes. No downfield throws, no running game, equals very few points.

Nar Dog sits in his hands as everyone else can see the problems.

This team is lazy and undisciplined.

Look, in reality this team should be 4-5 and their play the last few weeks supports this. The cincy game, WVU game were won because of Holstein and his ability to cover for the bad OL play in the second half of cincy and last few minutes of WVU. Unfortunately , whatever Holstein had or the confidence he had is totally gone: The Cal game was won only because they have a kicker who can’t make a 30 yarder. I know OL is a bad position to evaluate incoming talent, but it has been 5-8 yrs since Pitt had a… Read more »

People underestimate the loss of Branson Taylor. The offensive line had to be tweaked due to the loss. I do believe this is a talented team and they did have struggles against Virginia no doubt but they were beginning to show signs of life when Eli took a shot to the head. Some may laugh at what I’m about to say but a few of the receivers are Western Carolina warm weather guys that don’t have a ton of experience catching balls in colder weather coming off those rivers in Pittsburgh. The 4th down not in position thing is inexcusable… Read more »

I watched him get bullied on bull rushes for years he was part of the problem the o line couldn’t block a soul last yr either. Baer was in Ohio States backyard and had zero interests that’s all we should’ve needed to know about him.

I was shocked at how terrible Yarnell was. He was confident and competent in the last three games last season but that is all gone now. Does Bell’s offense require the qbs to think too much instead of just play ball?

Wait a minute… after 7-0 the talk on here was give Narduzzi credit for getting outside of his comfort zone and hiring Bell, firing his staff, and some of you were even suggesting he should be a coach of the year candidate.

Now it’s he can’t recruit, give an interview, he can’t make in game adjustments, etc.

Here’s an idea, stop getting too high nor too low during the season before making a conclusion and stop changing with the wind. It takes 12 games to form a conclusion, not 7 games nor 9 games.

Excellent insight that will be lost on most. When you read the comments on game threads on other sites you have to wonder what universe some of the folks are living in? This team is not anywhere near as good as we wanted to believe but neither is it as bad as some are now screaming. There are 3 games left. I think they’ll be hard pressed to beat Clemson or Louisville, I think they have an even chance to beat BC and finish 8-4, which is far better than most expected at the beginning of the season.

these guys are all bandwagon jumpers… steelers are 7-2 and world beaters. panthers are 7-2 and they suck. granted trends are going in the opposite directions. miami lost to GT . bama 7-2. georgia 7-2. a&m 7-2. clemson 7-2

It’s not that Pitt lost, it’s how they lost — and to an average team at best. Degrading opinions are also based on an inept offense since the Cal game.

Pat needs to go back to “ his Dad’s look!” Gameday neck-tie. You’re undefeated when wearing the tie!!!

Unless wearing the tie comes with 5 legit P4 offensive linemen I would say the tie won’t change anything these next 3 weeks.
