Over the weekend, one of the biggest upsets in college basketball came at the hands of a Pittsburgh native.
North Florida head basketball coach Matthew Driscoll, a Steel City native, led his team to its second high-major win of the young season when his squad took down Georgia Tech out of the ACC on Saturday.
North Florida coach Matthew Driscoll said they weren’t going to GT just to eat a nice meal and cash a check, they came to win. They got their second high-major win of the season knocking off GT after they beat South Carolina in their opener. The Osprey are 3-0.
North Florida won the game 105-93, with six players scoring in double figures for the Ospreys. Josh Harris, Jasai Miles, and Nate Lliteras each scored at least 18 points in the victory, and the team shot 54% from the field.
Georgia Tech was picked to finish 12th in the ACC preseason poll prior to this season. In its loss to UNF, Baye Ndongo, Kowacie Reeves, and Luke O’Brien led the way scoring-wise. Ndongo also grabbed ten rebounds, with three coming on the offensive end.
Driscoll brought his North Florida team up to Pittsburgh in the 2022-23 season. Pitt took down the Ospreys 82-56 in that game, with Federiko Federiko and Greg Elliott leading the way. In the postgame press conference (below), Driscoll dropped the word “yinz” several times naturally, and spoke about the basketball culture in his hometown of Pittsburgh. He said his team went to Primanti Brothers as well as Mineos.
“Growing up, it was always football. It was all about football. It was football. And then as I got older, and as I started getting into coaching, basketball really started coming around.”
