On Tuesday night, the Pitt women’s basketball team fell to West Virginia in Morgantown, 82-54.

This loss marks the seventh-straight loss to the Mountaineers for the Panthers.

Pitt forward Khadija Faye led the team with a double-double, scoring 14 points and grabbing 12 rebounds in the loss. Eight of her rebounds came on the offensive end, giving Pitt many second chances at scoring. However, she fouled out with more than eight minutes to play.

Pitt only trailed by ten points at the half, 35-25. Both teams struggled to shoot the ball from outside in the first half, as the Mountaineers went 2 for 14 from beyond the arch and the Panthers went 2 for 16. In that first frame, Faye led the way with nine points, while five other Panthers scored as well. West Virginia out-shot the Panthers in the first half, while forcing 15 Pitt turnovers. WVU stole the ball eight times in the first half alone.

In the third quarter, Pitt kept things relatively close, but the Mountaineers steadily piled on. Seven different West Virginia players scored in the third, led by JJ Quinerly, who hit three of her seven attempts in the quarter.

To wrap up the route, West Virginia doubled Pitt’s scoring in the final frame, scoring 26 points to Pitt’s 13. Lauren Rust provided 12 points for the Panthers on 4-for-7 shooting, while MaKayla Elmore scored nine, going 2 for 4 from the field. Mikayla Johnson took 20 shots in the loss, making four. She went 1 for 10 from three-point range and 0-2 from the free-throw line in the loss.

Pitt’s Amiya Jenkins left the game early due to injury.

With the loss, Pitt falls to 2-1 on the season. The Panthers will now take on Binghamton in Vestal, New York on Sunday, Nov. 17 at 1:30 p.m.
