PITTSBURGH –Pitt football offensive coordinator Kade Bell and assistant head coach/safeties coach Cory Sanders spoke with the media Tuesday afternoon on the South Side.

Bell spoke at length about quarterback Eli Holstein’s redshirt freshman campaign and how he has dealt with adversity over the past few weeks. He discussed how Holstein has handled facing different defensive looks and his willingness to learn at practice.

After Holstein left against Virginia, redshirt junior Nate Yarnell stepped in and completed 4-of-12 passes, along with a touchdown and two interceptions. Bell touched on his performance and how he has handled playing behind Holstein.

The first-year Pitt offensive coordinator also discussed the amount of drops by the wide receivers, saying they are “unacceptable.” He further noted the play of the offensive line and the injuries that have mounted, including left guard Ryan Jacoby, who was held out against Virginia.

Sanders talked all things defense, inlcuding the performance against Virginia. He felt the defense tackled better compared the SMU, but still allowed a few too many explosive plays.

He talked about safety Donovan McMillon and the veteran leadership he brings to the secondary and overall defense.

Sanders also provided his thoughts on what Clemson’s offense will bring against Pitt.

Keep pounding Reid and expecting a better result???… so reminiscent of the Cignetti/Jurkovich show. How about giving Daniel Carter the 15-20 carries… this young man deserves the opportunity and might provide a jolt this team is missing. Would be great not to see pre-snap stupid penalties.
